Bavaria Safety
I have a planned tour of Black forest and Bavaria in September this year, would like to know has anyone visited the area since the recent terrorist style attacks in Bavaria/Munich, may give Munich and the Oktoberfest a miss, would like to hear what you think?

It would be sad if you missed out on a fantastic part of Germany.
Beware the Octoberfest though, it can give you a really bad head, takes all your money and you wake up in a skip with a load of danish people.
No where is fully safe but take comon sense precautions and just enjoy yourselves.

Can people get some perspective on these events in life!? There are more people killed on the roads every day than in those isolated incidents yet no one asks if the roads are safe/dangerous! just get on with life, you are a long time dead so make the most
of the one life you have and live it, take risks, you might enjoy it.0 -
A friend of ours lives in Munich - he has to get on with life and isn't thinking of moving house either. He never goes to the Oktoberfest anyway as that isn't his thing, so for him no problem there, it's much overrated according to him after his one and
only visit many years ago.Just because something happened there, doesn't mean to say you are any "safer" (if there is indeed such a thing) in, say, Nuremberg or Ulm. In fact, one could argue it may now be safer in Munich.......

I see no reason not to travel where ever you want, when you want. As long as the traditional care and awareness is taken I see no problem.
I would like to say I am going to Munich tomorrow but I am not.
I always look at the numbers...there are over 80,000,000 people in Germany so the odds are very large.
However, if you, or anybody else, has the very slightest doubt....don't go!

If you are not prepared to take risks then how will you travel anywhere?! The two do not go together. Walking down the stairs is taking a risk, there are more deaths from domestic accidents than people killed by terrorists. i take it you will not be going
via France given the death rate from terrorist attacks over the past couple of years?0 -
Flatcoat, I will still be going to Bavaria, the " Discussion post was really aimed at
Caravanners currently in or have been recently to Bavaria and especially Munich , to get a feel for what the security is currently like.. I travelled with caravan and family to Paris earlier in the year and didnt see many police or security
at the main tourist sites, in fact the biggest threat seemed to be from the Roma gypsy men aggressive begging. I travel with the caravan extensively through Europe every year. David2115 hit the nail on the head,
its about me assessing the risk for me and the family, hence the point for discussion!0 -
Reading the papers today it seems like the biggest risk is the cross-channel ferry. They are planning armed marshals on the ships.

Well the worrying thing is that the fact that it has been mentioned could mean that there is intelligence on planned attacks. More risky than visiting any large city, given the area that a city occupies the risk that you are in the same location at the same
time as an attack is extremely low whereas a ferry or the tunnel is much higher.0 -
When I was working I was "ambushed" in Nigeria, nearly imprisoned in Sudan and had various other bad experiences. A few bombs going off her and there don't worry me. I do remember the Americans not wanting to visit London when the IRA bombings were happening.
Understandable if London was a village but not a vast metropolis with10 million or so people.I am really surprised that people would consider cancelling a holiday because of a few incidents. Caravanning and driving are far more dangerous than the incredibly low risk of being in the vicinity of an attack in a large city.

I won't stop going on holiday because of the chance of an attack but I will avoid going to highly advertised public events in places I'm not familiar with, why invite trouble, the Oktober fest will be on again next year and the next and the next
