Caen to Ares

hi

we are travelling to Ares in September and need an overnight stop- has anyone any recommendations? Also, my husband wants to avoid tolls as much as possible and use the N/D roads in conjunction with tolls- I'm worried about how much extra time it will add
to our 2 day journey. I've tried to plan the route but its not very clear which sections of the autoroutes  are chargeable. I do tend to use viamichelin maps to plan with.

Any suggestions or advice gratefully received.

Thank you

Pardon my ignorance but where is Ares? Time of Ferry would help us to assist.

I would reduce the tolls, but not eliminate them, by going via Rennes, Nantes and La Rochelle. A good road map will show you which roads have tolls and which don't. An overnight on that route could be in Nantes itself (worth a second day) or a site somewhere south of the city such as at Montbert, Les  Essarts, or Bournezeaux for a one night stop, but do check which of those overnight sites will be still open if you are going late in the month of September.

Michelin 1:250,000 maps show the toll free section mileages in blue while those that are charged for are in orange. Toll booths are shown by a black line across the autoroute.

Even avoiding autoroutes, I would think it was a relatively easy drive over two days assuming you are disembarking early on the first morning.

Found Ares!  Caen to Ares is about 400 miles easily doable in 2 days.  But if you are getting the Ferry which gets in 9.30 pm you will need to stay near Caen (Riva Bella for us) then it's 2 easy days to Ares.  Not done that route but others have made sound suggestions.

I would go Le Mans-La Fleche-Samur-Poitiers- pick up the N10 to Bordeaux- round the ring road then to Ares. The only site I have stayed at on this route is Camping de la Route d’Or at La Fleche which may not be far enough for you for the first day but it
is a good site with and easy walk into town.

We are also at River Bella from the afternoon Portsmouth Caen ferry.  CC book says no twin axles but have phoned the site and no problems.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier  Ares is in the Arcachon.Bay near Bordeaux . We are on the overnight ferry to Caen arriving about 8.30 am. I was thinking about going via Le Man's just because we have been to la Rochelle via Nantes and Rennes on a few occasions.
Lots of useful advice appearing - i can see a planning day looming !!!!

If you don;t get a good nights sleep perhaps you won't feel like driving too far. A stop over at La Fleche might be a good idea?

Thanks everyone, I've appreciated your advice and am going to go with the La Fleche/Saumur/Poitiers route especially as there have been holdups around Nantes. Also made note of the campsites links......

    Thanks again.

    Can't wait  !!!
