TRAFFIC UPDATE 25.07.2016
Roads outside of the Port are currently clear. The Port is expected to be busy throughout the day (Monday) so please allow plenty of time for French Border checks prior to check-in.
CUSTOMERS: Please continue to check with your chosen ferry operator and allow plenty of time before you travel.
The Port and our ferry operators continue to work hard to serve all customers travelling to or from the continent. Please consult Port of Dover website (www.doverport.co.uk) or Twitter account (@PoD_Travelnews) for the latest information.
Thank you for your ongoing cooperation.0 -
Perhaps, just perhaps, there was some intelligence that terrorist(s) were about to enter France from England, and so aditional security was implemented. If they had got through then, as far as I know, that would be a first.

Whilst talking about borders, the Germans have had three serious incidents in as many days and today we travelled from Traunstein in Bavaria to Salzburg and not only were our tickets not checked neither were our passports on any part of the return trip.
If a country is under attack they seal their borders and Shengen doesn't apply/is suspended.0 -
There were queues on the French side of the tunnel this morning due to security checks. There were also quote "technical problems" with the tunnel operations as well with about an hour delay of trains in some cases.

Both the ferry companies and Eurotunnel are warning of increased waiting times and as for technical stuff causing delays these happen too. We wre once 'evacuated' in our vehicles from a Eurotunnel train whilst waiting to depart because one of the doors wouldn't
close.Just another day at the office....

What is annoying is the poor staffing levels to deal with the extra checks. There are 6 check in lanes, one is dedicated to coaches but even so, of the remaining 5, only two were in operation! It took me an hour an a half to get from the pet check in straight to the boarding lane.

I wonder who is picking up the bill for all the delays? I somehow Suspect it won't be the French......... Might also be useful to know if there are similar checks required (and ensuing delays) on the other border crossings twixt France and neighbouring countries. If so fine, if not then the question needs to be asked why just the UK?
...There were horrendous queues between Spain and France a few months ago for extra security checks after the Bataclan attacks too. There were also queues to and from France to Belgium for the same reason.
The French have every right to do what they like in their own country so if you don't like what is happening then cross the channel somewhere else into either Spain, Belgium or Holland.
The one thing that makes me quite cross is the absolute arrogance of some British people who think the French have to answer to them for the delays. If we had enhanced security checks (which we often do at our airports) which cause delays would you sanction being lectured to by the French or any other nationality? I think not. I fear it is something we are all going to have to learn to live with.0 -
Its not about the rights and wrongs of the French. It is simply the fact that with only 3, yes 3 booths from a possible 10 open it is going to slow things down. Remember the french labour market are on a work to rule about the same issue which caused the
fuel shortage earlier. Of course were as bad, last sunday week at 8.30am half hour queues built up in Calais again given only 3 UK booths open out of 10, seems the way of the world right now.Do as we are going to do, give Euro a complete miss

We voted to "take control" of our borders (remember ?) yet seem surprised and outraged when another country does just that.

We crossed from Belgium into France yesterday and were held up for something like three quarters of an hour for reasons which we couldn't understand. There were no police and no controls, but all traffic had to leave the A16 at the first exit in France,
drive once round a roundabout and rejoin the motorway at the same junction. What that was supposed to achieve other than to cause a major traffic jam which resulted in us just managing to catch the ferry that we booked is a bit beyond me.We had no problems between Germany and Holland nor between Holland and Belgium, though.

I am not questionning the need to carry out additional secirity checks and indeed, I have referred to the fact it is the future. However I do have the right to question the efficacy of the process and the ability of the French to do anything with any degree
of speed whilst still being thorough. Even the French president of the Chamber of trade in Calais is complaining about their own procedures and delays so i have no need to feel guilty about challenging the hold ups. Try asking the self employed
lorry drivers whose cargos of fresh food was ruined by the delays and who takes the financial hit in their pockets what they think! Given the now exposed cover up regarding lax security in Caan and yesterdays horror with the tagged terrorist i doubt I will
be going any where near France again anytime soon after this years short journey which we are now committed to. The alternative crossings have been checked for availability and are unsurprisingly all booked solid.0 -

Clearly there is going to loads of room in France so its going to be even quieter for those of us that love the place.

I might not be about security of France, it is more than likely the crossing whether by ferry or tunnel is considered the target? It does not make sense for the French to tighten up security at just one of its borders which seems to be the case. Certainly when I drove across the Spanish/French border, admittedly before the Caen incident there wasn't any sign of any security and I believe that is still the case.

And that is partly my point too. The border security process is inconsistent so no wonder the french govt cant protect its citizens.
I returned Dieppe to Newhaven on Saturday teatime and there were no delays, just a couple of gendarmes/Douane folk at Dieppe and the usual couple of border control staff at Newhaven briefly checking the departing traffic.

,,Next month when ALL the French are departing from evertwhere ,,,IF they decide to come to the U.K ,will we be HOLDING THEM UP to enter our country ? ? ? !!!.The French are remarkably insular when it comes to most things including holidays. I suspect very few will want to come to the UK. Our weather is a major deterrent.....
