As for not leaving the country, why? there are plenty of other ways to get to the continent and if you want to go a short route Eurotunnel seem to be coping reasoably well.
Got rid of my passport a few years ago, at my age I would like to see a little more of my country all those who go abroad always come back to this beautiful land.

I feel for the people caught up in the delays at Dover, but there are other crossings. Not much comfort for those affected at the moment but next time why not try one of the others. Personally I have only experienced Dover - Calais once, that was 10yrs ago
on a coach trip to the Dutch bulb fields, then we were subject to a three hour delay, not even peak season. If travelling to northern European countries we always go from Harwich and for France Plymouth or Portsmouth. Personal choice I know, but why subject
yourself to these problems.0 -
Sorry but a 12 hour delay at Britain's major Ferry port is a disgrace. No excuses, if they can't cope with the numbers then the ferry companies should not take the bookings. An hour or even two hours delay may be acceptable on the busiest weekend of the
year but anything more is just very, very bad planning. It seems as if it is the French authorities that are the problem not the ferry companies. They are victims of the situation as much as the passengers.
Write your comments here...Not blaming the ferry companies however most people travelling at the weekend would have a booking therefore the auutorities would know exactly the numbers travelling and should plan accordingly.
Write your comments here...Kayak, it is a bit like a doctor's appointment, you have a time but do you know how serious the condition of the patient in front of you is? Some can be serious some not.You don't know what small discrepancy in the paperwork of
the cars in front of you can cause a hold up to check add this small amount of time to the thousands of passport/visas being checked and it all adds up.The French customs in Dover had 1 person checking a coach with over 40 passengers, this takes time, Patience
is needed or take a serious look at your time for your journey. SG2That is my point, one person checking passports when even I could have told them it was the busiest weekend of the year. I'm sure the ferry companies pass on the expected numbers so again I still think it is
very bad planning.0 -

You cannot get away from the fact that the number of people travelling this weekend was known by everyone concerned from the ferry companies, who I do not blame, to the port authorities and British and French border control staff. Planning should have taken
place. I also have to say that if anybody has made a stupid post it is yours as someone has already pointed out.0 -

For goodness sake. If you are going to blame anybody for delays in travelling to France -----Blame the terrorists who have been carrying out shocking atrocities in that fine country.
Of course France has a right to tighten up its security at its borders. Any country which didnt would be negligent.
That travellers did not forsee those delays is nobodys fault but their own. It was predicted by many authorities days in advance.
People should therefore, having been pre warned, have made alternative travel arrangements including destinations. They should have made sure that they carried food and drinks to sustain them during any delay.
K
..Good post K ,

It's not good for the Folk caught up in the jams as they are being but I can understand the French having concerns over security they have had a lot of their nationals murdered recently. The work of the Terrorists continue to disrupt I'm afraid.

It is happening on several borders on mainland europe there have been two hour delays on border between Austria and Germany for a while ,it is nothing to do with brexit, it is govenments waking up to the fact that the Schengan agreement did not work

+1, open door policy plays into the hands of those who'd hurt us all. To a greater or lesser degree.

It's a horrible situation for those caught up in it, made all the more difficult as no doubt most of those who booked their holidays could have no foresight of the terrible attacks that have taken place.
I for one doubt that the fact that UK voted to leave EU has made any difference. UK border controls should have, in fact may have realised that there would be extra problems, but the response has been very slow. This appears to be borne out by statement
from local MP, who raised the issue. As someone who has travelled abroad, albeit not in a tourer, I am happy to comply with whatever safety checks are deemed necessary. This will also be my mindset when we take our tourer abroad.

I have to put in a word for the poor unfortunate locals who must feel that they have been encircled. Try doing your normal errands with this going on. You have my sympathies.
Plus, I wonder how many of the travellers will be staying at home next year on the basis of "I'm not going through that again!"?

I think the French Border control staff are at this terrible period for their citizens, are stretched beyond the resources they have, and as we know diplomacy is a delacate process, and one nation that is very "sensitive" is France, so i am sure there were quite a few "phone/emails between our two countries before it was agreed that the UK Border force personel could be used to bolster another countries border checks, which it seems has since improved the situation at Dover,
"others might think otherwise"
Ps maybe the 3600 truck park being planned just off the M20 is a sign of the future, when all european countries "close " the open acccess now enjoyed

Call me a cynic, but knowing what we now know, I find it strange that the border between France and Belguim is a slow down and the odd vehicle pulled over for further inspection. Strange then isn't it that just as the UK start its busy holiday period the
French decide to increase further the security from Dover.0 -
