hi we are doing 12 month tour of Europe, and as we are new to caravaning we did not know anything about these Aires, having seen a few on our trips, but have not seen a caravan on them, so are they allowed or is it just for camervans?

I believe the general rule is NO, but someone did mention a little while back that there is a list somewhere of Aires (or Stellplatz) in Germany that do allow caravans,

I think you can stop on "Aires de Reste " in France as they are open to all, you can also use service areas, other aires are normally only for "Campers vans"?

in France AFAIK its the Aires de Repose on Mways and main routes where caravans (well, anyone really) can stopover...

these are normally the ones that motorhomers wouldnt frequent.. (noisy, smelly, loads of traffic....)....well, would you overnight in services on the M6?Sad

the lovely village and town aires, along with those in the centre of many cities, are the preserve of 'camping caristes' I'm afraidHappy

We have used two service stations overnight both were excellent situated away from the road noice and away from the service area, first one was Aberville second was Agen' but I was meaning more the Aires in the towns and villages etc, so looks like it's
    a no then.

The Italian equivalent of aires are known as "sostas" or "aree di camper". These are motorhome only, with one or two exceptions. The exceptions are clearly signed, such as this one at Orvieto.

The idea of an "aire" is to provide a "parking area" for a large vehicle - ie a motorhome, often free of charge or with a low cost. These are often in town and village centre, thus with a good chance of revenue into shops, restaurants etc.

Cars can generally speaking park pretty much anywhere whilst the caravan remains on the campsite

    Orvieto camper stop.

We've seen the occasional caravan on AIres here in France this month.

But not on pay Aires, only free ones such as parked alongside Motorhomes on quaysides, and if money is collected on any Aire the caravanner is asked to move.

Don't get Aires on motorways (anyone can stay on these) and aires near villages etc  which, in France, are campers only mixed up.  Never have and would not stay overnight on a motorway aire, much nicer to use the local municipal site.  Motorway Aires are of course excellent for rest/meal stops en route.
