Caravan insurance while stored abroad

We are thinking of going to Spain in September for 2/3 months then leaving the van in storage on site, returning to the Uk for 2 months then going out for 2/3 months in 2017.

We are covered by CC insurance which only covers for 182 days.

What do other menbers do who store abroad?

Our caravan is covered by the storage company we use whilst in storage & for them transporting to site. At present we chance it whilst we are using it on site, but I believe Towergate insurance will cover a van stored abroad, whilst CC insurance ceases when
    you leave it.

We have our caravan stored in France, and insure with Towergate.  The cost is quite modest - in fact cheaper than our insurance was to keep the van in England.  I'm not sure how this would work out if you intend bringing the caravan backwards on forwards,
or are you planning to leave it in Spain?

This is a sort of trial. We have been thinking of transferring the storage to mid-west France so it is handy for going in any direction(except UK). We have yet to do any serious investigation of French sites. The move back and forth to Spain  this winter,
free of caravan, would give us a chance to visit a few facilities.

Once we fully store abroad then of course we would have to look at insurance providers other than the CC.

We may have to get separate cover from the likes of  Towergate for the short period of storage this winter.

ValDa do you have any recommendations for storage sites in France? Do you find that the van is in good condition when you come to pick up or do you have spend a day cleaning it? How do you manage battery charging? Do you take it home with you?

It's clean, because we have a cover - so it comes out as clean as it was when we put it away.

We don't need to charge our battery.  It charges up once it's plugged in.  OH checks it regularly, and it would be taken home to 'sort out' if there was a problem.  We have the caravan serviced every couple of years by an English caravan engineer who visits a number of storage depots and services all the caravans.  We did bring it back about three years ago because we had a lot of DIY stuff to do - and during that 'home visit' we replaced the tyres.

We're having to move ours, and we're going out this afternoon to check out some in the local area (Mediterranean side of the Languedoc).  We've just chatted to a couple who have their caravan in storage and have had it there for fifteen years.  They pay 210 euros and it's towed to site and back for them before each holiday.  They hire a car each holiday and fly down twice a year.

Others have recommended a campsite (British owned) at Navarrenx, which does caravan storage and is more convenient for those planning to head down to the southern parts of Spain - but there are so many storage sites in Spain that unless you intend to use the van more in France then it might make sense to look at one of those near where you want to be in Spain, and get it towed to site and fly down.

I should have added that our caravan was stored in a barn, so dry and under cover, but it was rather dusty and in the spring full of nesting swallows -- so the caravan doesn't need a clean, but perhaps the cover could now do with a wash.

Thanks ValDa. We don't always go to Spain. We spent 6 weeks in France in May/June this year. I love France, I lived in the South for 15 years in the 80s, but we spend late Winter in Spain because the weather is warmer and the birds migration in the SW is
fantastic. I'm a very keen birder for the last 60 years so Spain is like heaven. France is excellent as well but later in the year.

I think I may have to get cover from Towergate for the period abroad but keep CC as well as I don't want to lose the new for old cover just yet. Hopefully it won't cost too much. We currently have it in storage in Kent costing £450 pa. Places are scarce
so we have to keep hold in case it doesn't work out. Who says caravanning is a cheap alternative?
