Maybe tell us where you intend to cross the border that'll give folks a helping hand.

Not sure if this is the right area to post, however....... We're experienced UK 'vanners, and looking to make our first foray to Spain for the forthcoming winter (not withstanding the current political 'position'!) and looking for some advice. Our last foray
to Spain was in '82, travelling from Germany when I was serving there with the RAF, but now am a little unsure on the best way forward. Would look to travel via Santander or Bilbao, intending to stay in the south coast of Spain. Any advice on best Sites, best
route and preferred overnight stops/route. Look forward to your thoughts.

I think this thread is already in danger of becoming confused with one member asking about the North of Italy and the other Spain?

All depends very much on starting point in the UK, previous experience, need for specific route and site advice or finance and other topics. Plus dates of travel as out of season there is usually little need to book.

From our experience, the main thing is that you can't expect Club site standards and pitches are often not delineated, can be much smaller and may be very tight for caravans (not big enough for van, car, awning) IMHO, a mover is essential for larger vans
but others may have no need?

For Italy we'd deifinitely go to the Garda area again and really enjoyed Torbole at the N. of the lake. We came in via Germany, The Fern Pass & Austria via the Brenner motorway,

Happy to contribute further, in answer to specific requests.

As with most countries it depends on what type of holiday you are looking for. If you like to relax, swim, walk, cycle and eat good food I'd suggest Camping Capalonga in Bibione Pineda. Forget the posts about mosquitoes, the site sprays on a regular basis
and they are well under control. If you like to visit towns and cities then the Garda area is a reasonable base but it can be very crouded. We prefer Lake Maggiore or Como than the Garda shores. Most sites in Italy will be busy during the first 3 weeks in August
hence you will need to book ahead (and take an aircon. unit). At other times booking is not normally necessary. Italy is a wonderful country and the people very friendly.

Northern Italy means the Lakes. Garda is very good but Maggiore more attractive. If you go through Switzerland Maggiore is very easy as it starts at Locarno which is only a half day from Basel. If you are going via Austria then Garda and Venice are more
    accessible.
