Quick Question for Cyberyacht.
You recently mentioned a convenient last-minute refuelling stop in Portsmouth to top up before leaving for France. I recall somewhere called Northharbour (??) being mentioned.
Would you mind mentioning it again, any useful details for getting there and if you can access it easily with a caravan in tow.

The Tesco at Hedge End has pretty good access. If you pull over to the pumps over on the left you can pull forward round the back of the payment shop. Have a look at it on Goggle Earth.

Thanks Ian, I would normally, but ferry arrives 6.45am in Caen and more to the point I dont trust the French to supply me with diesel reliably, so want as few fill-ups as possible. Rather leave England with a near-full tank.
The current fuel situation has calmed down judging by all the really useful reports on here by members travelling in France, but perhaps we still should bear in mind that fuel supplies are coming from the French government's reserves as I understand that
the refineries are still strike-bound. How long these reserves will last one wonders.Peter.

There's a Tesco superstore at Northhabour it's at Clement Attlee Way Portsmouth Portsmouth PO6 4SR you need to get off the M27 at the Cosham exit and head towards Fareham from there. It's the same junction , J12, as the ferry but you turn off earlier rather than joining the M275, I hope that makes sense. It is then easy to get back on the M275. Other than that there are services on the M27 at Rownhams and there's also a petrol station by the port if you pass the ferry towards Portsmouth and come back on yourself, but I have no idea on caravan access here, so check it out on Google Earth .

There is no problem filling up anywere in France at the present time. Where did you get the idea that refineries are still closed due to strikes? There is nothing about this in French newspapers or on the TV nor does Google offer information about it.
When we left France on the 2nd June the reporting on the TV news and in the newspapers was that all the strikes were over - and that fuel supplies were heading back to normality.

Reports stating five refineries would be strike-bound until June 10th at least. CGT hasn't given up by any means and is likely to keep up their pressure until Hollande backs down on labour reforms. France is apparently still using oil reserves for the time
being.I'm simply being a little cautious, I appreciate you may know better.

I can't find any recent updates on Reuters - all reports appear to be dated around the 22nd May - with nothing more recent. However, if there is a more recent report do you have a link to it. We're planning to go back again o very soon with my son and
his partner - and coming up to peak season it would be good to be armed with up to date knowledge.0 -

The last report I saw on Reuters was June 7, which was a while ago, about fuel imports through French channel ports. Several Total refineries were then still closed until further notice and the political
situation with the French government remaining unresolved. Channel ports were partially blockaded for diesel and petrol.The potential for this to turn nasty again remains, until either the government or the unions back down. No sign of either doing so.
I appreciate that all seems fine at the moment but from a personal point of view, as we are travelling though France to Spain over the next three weeks, the situation needs watching as the "tap" could doubtless be turned off at a moments notice if the union
bullies decide to do so.France has reserves yes, but only for 90 days (from when?). Assuming the assessment of consumption is correct.
I am simply stating that no one travelling in France at the moment should be complacent about their supplies of fuel given the political impasse.
Hopefully the moderators won't delete this discussion as being political.

Whatever the situation in France it makes perfect sense to me to enter France with a full tank of fuel. With a motorhoome it relatively easy to get into filling stations but more difficult with a caravan, having done both. The reality is that the cost advantge is so small that it makes sense to fill up in the UK which gives you more freedom once on the other side.
