Although there is mention of this in another post, I thought it deserved a separate thread.

From April 2016 Tesco mobile are to scrap mobile roaming charges in Europe and several other countries.

Details here: Tesco Mobile

It applies to existing as well as new customers.

We have a Tesco mobile and get good coverage in France, without problems, so this is good news for us.

Worth noting that the 'offer' expires 3 September 2016, so check tarifs if you are away later in the year.

Interesting, covers even more countries than Three.

Pity it's a limited time offer though.

We won't be changing just yet.

I don't think it will be limited to September 2016, because the unmentionable directive has banned roaming charges after 2017.   I suspect Tesco have only put that to attract customers to get in there quickly to take advantage over the summer.

Here's a link to the Guardian article  about the  unmentionable directive.

Mrs M is on tesco, so that's useful to know as we're away in Slovenia next week. Mind you, since I can't guarantee that she won't exceed her minutes if she finds out, I'm going to keep it to myself. Useful to know in case of emergency though. Thanks for
    that, Valda! Happy

Sneaky one Moulesy.  I have told my OH, and until I change my contract, I shall be 'borrowing' his phone more.

Also worth noting that the data use excludes using your phone as a WiFi point for other devices. The amount of data use by mobile phones on their own is quite small. Margaret is on her second 250MB Travel Pass with Virgin in six weeks. I think I am on my
fifth as I have used mine ocassionaly as a WiFi point when I have not had a good site WiFi signal. Perhaps the time limit is in place just as an insurance policy in case things change after the 23rd?

David, does it know you are using it as a WiFi point? If I check my emails on the phone, or link to it with my pad I am using the same app. We are not on tesco but O2 just wondered if this would also apply to their daily charge.

    Steve

A good question. My researches online suggest that networks can identify when a phone is being teethered although I equally suspect that it might only kick in if they monitor excessive use of data? The problem is nowadays is that we don't talk to each other
on phones anymore we  just use other means to communicate which happen to use a lot of data. Using your phone as a WiFi point to download a few e-mails is unlikely to be flagged up as excessive use but if you are always downloading movies onto a laptop it
    might?

I don't know how the phone company knows you are tethering, but they do. I have a 3 contract. When we were in France last month (Before the fuel strike and rain thankfully) I tried tethering my laptop to the phone to check the traffic. I quickly got a message
saying that I couldn't tether, then lost internet accessibility for a couple of hours. This bears out what David is saying I think. It must have something to do with how much data you pull in a short time.

I have just posted re using Internet to watch TV and, as a 3 customer, I know that I can't tether the iPad when abroad. Maybe the two are connected.........or not as the case may be!
