Weather here at Beaulieu sur Dordogne has taken a turn for the worse. Heavy rain yesterday afternoon and last night. Showers this morning and chilly enough for a fleece. Might move on because forecast for week ahead is more of the same. Any suggestions where
it might be above 20 degrees and the sun will shine? Thinking of Millau area. So what is it like there at the moment? Anyone there right now?

Sorry about that. But the maps of France on La Chaine Meteo make it plain where to go - right down to the south.  Good luck.

As you say the forecast on Meteofrance doesn't look good for the next week. Although we haven't had good weather In Beaulieu, the Lot and the Auvergne for the past six weeks it wasn't usually as bad as forecast so I think that they play safe and tell us
the worst. So maybe it won't be as bad as you expect.

Come here to the Genets d'or in Bagnols-sur-ceze. Beautiful weather and very settled. You might have to kick a few Dutch out to find a good pitch. They know their sites!

We crossed over to France on 4th May and have travelled all the way to Vienna and back along the Danube Valley and then into Germany on the Bodensee and now at Molsheim in Alsace. I would say this has been the worse holiday for weather we have ever experienced,
in fact it has almost put us off coming again and if we do it will only be down to the Med coast!!

Unfortunately in the last three years this has not be an isolated experience.

After 30 years caravanning in France we learned two lessons. 1. Never book (even in August) 2. Be flexible. So many times we arrived in Calais to pouring rain so instead of going to the Loire or Dordogne as planned we would get on the A26 and head South.
The sun always comes out when you reach Valence. No need for the Med. (which we dislike) lots of places to visit inland in Provence, Gar, Languedoc etc.

I would echo DK's post, this is the 3rd consecutive visit to France that the weather has been awful. The weather started out in Salamanca cold but sunny, got much hotter as we moved to Caceres and then stayed that way until coming back into France last Thursday,
we are currently in Limoges and its pouring down. We thought of going to the islands on the West but the forecast wasn't good there either, we have 8 days left until the ferry and most of it looks like being wet ones. Don't think I will book a return ferry
in future just play as we go like we did at the end of last year, at least then you can pick a time and route to suit.

Our site near Avignon is nearly full. The Dutch have been pouring over the weather charts (they tell me) and France is wet until the weekend unless you are South of Lyon or Med. coast. Its beautiful here, 26 today and forecast good except for Wed.

If in France make sure you have the Metéo-France app.

And I would echo Tammygirl's advice that if you're going for a longish time, then don't book your return crossing in advance.  We've found very little difference in the cost of two single crossings on the short routes, and only book a day or two before we set off from the Aude to 'come home'.

For me there would be nothing worse than having a last wet week just because I'd booked a ferry in advance.  If the forecasts between where I was and the ports was universally bad I would rather book a ferry for a day or two later, pack up, drive to the port, and get on with my gardening at home!

And I would also echo Hitchglitch's advice about not booking - again I would hate to be sitting inside the caravan in the torrential rain which had been falling for a week at Camping Lovely Municipal,  whilst at Camping Beautiful Municipal just a hundred or so miles away, my friends were basking in wall to wall sunshine.

I agree with everything ValDa has said above, you do learn the more you do it and sitting around waiting for the weather to change is just a waste of a holiday.

Moving around is fine if you are at the start or middle of your holiday but if you are in the closing stages of your trip options are more limited.Three years ago we drove from  a sodden southern Germany to the Med coast of France. We are now in the situation
that we have a week before getting home so we doon't have many real options to chase the weather.

Bit like us then DK, ferry next week. Our fault entirely we should have stayed in Spain a bit longer but we only went to L'Amfora to use up the 4 CC's that were going out of date. The site was full and very noisy this year so didn't fancy staying any longer,
last year it was half empty lovely and quiet. We could have moved next door or just down the road but felt we should move further a field to justify packing up. Anyway we have discovered 2 new sites that we would use again so all is not lost, I just wish the
rain would let up so I can go  shopping. Its at times like this I miss having a car and caravanSurprised

AD, just been talking to an elderly couple who have been over for 4 weeks, they were evacuated from a site on their first night and have only had 2 days without rain so far. Last year we rediscovered Spain and now have no problem's with running for the sun
if needed. This year the sites were far more busy just across the border than last year, there can be very few Dutch back home as they seem to all be in Spain or on their way there. It's such a shame for France, we want to see more of it but not like this.

My post a couple of hours ago has disappeared into the ether. I thanked those for their suggestions about locations that could be warmer and less wet than here at Beaulieu on the Dordogne. It poured last night here, all this afternoon and it is still raining.
Still have 11 days before going home and if I can get awning dry pack up and head for Millau - if there is better weather there.

A warning. Check your travel insurance if you decide not to book a return ferry before arriving in France .  There is often something in the wording of policies to say that this is necessary. This is to prevent expats with British registered cars from using
holiday travel insurance as their breakdown cover.

I make two separate bookings because, with Brittany Ferries anyway, the return can be altered without financial penalty. This is not the case with a return booking if you have undertaken the first half of the journey.

Another day here in Normandy looking wet. I've even put the heating on in the caravan this morning for the first time. We are so  disappointed with the weather.First visit to France too. Perhaps we should head for Southern France as we still have over two weeks left.

Just checked distance, over 1000km from Rouen, I think we'll stick it out and hope the rain stops soon.

We're not in France at the moment (and it's raining here too) - but use La Chaine Meteo to have
a look at the weather, and to be honest it doesn't look good, almost anywhere in France.  Our friends in the Aude report very mixed weather still,  with lots of rain, and little sunshine but mostly overcast days.  The local people say it's the worst weather
they've ever known, and liken it to February rather than June!  You can also look at 'alerts' on French Weather Warnings which
will give you more idea of the extent of the poor weather.

Even down into north eastern Spain (Mediterranean) the weather isn't looking good at the moment, and according to people who are there, sites are filling up because people haven't found good weather in France.

I do hope you find somewhere which is drier and sunnier than where you are now.  This does seem to be one of those years where it just  isn't possible to avoid bad weather.

It's not just France that is having poor weather.  We are in Italy by Lake Trasimono in Umbria and the weather has been very unsettled and most disappopinting.  We even looked at moving to Croatia but the 14 day forecast for Krk/Pula is, if anything, worse
than that for here!  However, the wine is good and the sun, when it shines, hot.  A great experience watching the Euros in an Ialian bar so may as well stay put and get the bbq out undr the sun(rain) awning.  Re an earlier comment about the Dutch being in
France, they are also here as well; Holland must be empty; they are great company and know how to enjoy themselves!

Hi Poshman.  We live 65 miles west of Millau and I'm afraid the weather is little better here.  If you look at www.sat24.com you will see the radar weather picture for Europe.  From that you will see that most of Europe and half of Spain is currently in cloud. We have thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for our area for the next 5 days.  Having said that, the Tarn Gorges are spectacular and well worth seeing whatever the weather.  We can recommend an excellent site which is one of our favourites at Camping Les Peupliers at Riveriere sur Tarn.  It is ideally placed to explore the Gorge and they also have a lovely restaurant and pool which are open at this time of the year.  They have beavers living in the river just alongside the campsite and you can saunter down with a glass of wine and watch them at dusk.  It is ACSI rates until the end of June.  There is also camping Les Rivages in Millau itself.  A lovely site within walking distance of the town with its excellent weekly market.  That may suit you better is the weather is variable.
PS:  There are also boat trips under the Millau Bridge and loads of other attractions that can take your mind off the weather.

Thanks for that Oldgirl & Staffy. Don't expect the weather will vastly improve but it has to be better than here in the Dordogne. Chucked it down again this evening but it turned so cold at 9pm that I had to put on trousers instead of shorts for the first
time in 12 days plus a jumper and fleece. Yes, I could be in Scotland! Plan to give Les Rivages a try - and hope I can salvage something from third damp French holiday.

Much better weather today than forecast,  it said thunderstorms,  however we didn't get any, a few small showers and we did see the sun for awhile. Hope tomorrow brings the same. After yesterdays heavy rain the river is a bit higher but not dangerously so.
