Non France sites

May well now change direction from next Tuesday because of the fuel problem and head for either Black Forest, warm part of Austria, perhaps Slovenia or the Italian Lakes. Perm any one from those 4.

Could the well-travelled and knowledgeable amongst us please nominate a favourite site in those locations. Now have to do my planning in a hurry. Like quiet sights (just 2 of us old buffers), do a lot of walking, like some views, nice to be close to a village
or town and if it is a warmish area so much the better. Any suggestions are very welcome (and I know there would have been a thread or two over the last 12 months offering recommendations for those areas).

Thanks

We left lake Maggiore last week and the 'Conca d'Oro' was a great site we stayed at, besides the onsite restaurant there were plenty of other eating places nearby. We also did some good walks that were within close distance.

Prefer 'Garda' to 'Maggiore' but that might be due to just our locations we stayed at.

We are now at lake Garda (leaving tomorrow for Adriatic coast) and staying at 'Baia Verde', good amenities but right by the lake so travelling needed toget into the countryside. Both sites have good size pitches which for us is essential as we have no motormover and Italian sites can be a bit tight.

After the Adriatic coast we will head inland of Slovenia and stay at a favorite 'lake Bled', a very busy site but great for sightseeing.

Sieser Alm, north of lake Garda, just south of Brenner pass. Fabulous caravan site Up in the mountains, great walking. Or, St Wolfgangsee. There is a lovely family run site on the west side of st Wolfgang, lovely views across the lake and another good area
for walking in the mountains visiting all the Alms!

If you like Ossiacher See we stayed at Camping Bad Ossiacher See at Annenhiem about  10 days ago. Very nice site with friendly reception. Train nearby into Villach and supermarkets about a kilometre away. In the ACSI book.

If you are travelling through Slovenia I can highly recommend Camping Bled.  Nice inexpensive site directly opposite the classic island on the lake view that is so famous.  Walk out of the site and round the lake stopping for coffee and cake at the hotel at the top end.  Also nearby is the Vintgar Gorge which is a good walking opportunity.  We went on to Istria, Croatia before lake Iseo in Italy - there's a great walk round the island in the lake.  Came back via Mont Blanc tunnel stopping in the French Alps at St Gervais les Baines where ther is a cracking site with mountain views.  If any of this is of interest you can see our blog here. (you can skip over the icy bits).

    1. Black Forest for woods.

    2. Slovinia is like Wales.

    3. Italian Lakes are expensive and crowded.

    4.  Austria for best views, walks etc. Try a site East of Salsburg on the Lakes near Mondsee and you won't go wrong.

Or the Mosselle.  Leaving for Italy in a couple of hours.  Going through Belgium, then Germany we may stay a few days in lovely Bavaria, then into Austria where we plan to stay for 10 days.  There are plenty of alternatives to France, try looking at Dianne's
'Joys of European  Caravanning' blog (sorry don't know how to do the link); there are lots of possibilities covered there.

Camping Capalonga in Bibione Pineda ticks all the boxes. Very friendly site. Great walking and cycling, near to a village and town. It's micro climate means that it's often sunny and warm even when places in land are not so good. Excellent beach or quiet
pitches overlooking the lagoon. Good sized pitches. Great restaurants or local fresh food to self cater. A relaxing atmosphere for young and old although there's not a great deal for teenagers. I know I'm biased but I much prefer to holiday in Italy.

Thanks for the suggestions of places to head for instead of taking a risk on fuel supplies in France.

But the situation does seem to have improved according to reports from people on the ground and may well revert to original plan of going down to the Dordogne on Tuesday. Will fill up in Kent and take with me 20 litres of diesel in jerry cans (I'm going
through the Tunnel) just in case! A top up in Chartres should see me get to Beaulieu sur Dordogne via Oradour.
