Le Relais
i realise these are transport cafes and are extremely popular with the wagon drivers. Other half is keen to try them, he says the food is known to be good and the prices cheap. I'm reluctant thinking its a men only domain. Anyone tried them?

There are lots of Le Relais Routiers, which I think is what you mean, and to be perfectly honest the food is some is mediocre. In others it can be fantastic. The same applies to prices - some are very cheap, others less so. There are mostly men, but I've never been in one with no other women.
In some tables are 'communal', and dishes are brought to the table to serve yourself, rather than getting everything on a plate. There are generally pichets of wine as part of the meal - and often a help yourself buffet of crudites. You may not get a menu at all, just the set menu of the day, which is sometimes as many as five or even six courses!
It helps to be there early! Watch how many drivers visit the one near you (wherever you are) and then get there before 12 the next day!
Here the Relais Routiers website to look up those in areas you may be visiting.
Can't paste a hyperlink for some reason - so here's the website:

I agree wkth Val, we've had some indifferent food but also some gems. But of course I can't remember when & where!
The buffet starters are often the best bit - main dishes seem to be often overcooked and a bit tasteless.
We're there as a couple and never noticed any problem with one of us being female.
