Good Morning

The last weekend in June we will for the first time turn left out of Calais and head for Italy. We have researched the various routes until we are blue in the face, the main objective being to get there asap but with safely a priority. We both drive and
have travelled France and Spain many times, so are far from novices.

We have come up with the following Michellin recommended route and would appreciate any views or recommendations -

Leave Calais via the A26 > to Reims > A4 N44 Chalons en Champagne > St Dizier > N4 A31 > Nancy > A33 Luneville > N59 Selestat > A35 Clomar and on to Mulhouse > Cross Swiss border pass Basle > A2 thru Belchen Tunnel on to Olten > A1 and then A2 to Sursee,
Luzern, Altdorf > Gotthardtunnel >  Bellinzona > A2 A9 to Lugano > A8 Milan > A4 Bergamo and then Brescia before leaving this at Desenzano del Garda. Distance 714 miles 'ish.

Your thoughts would be appreciated as would any regarding the site and the journey from the A4 to it. Though of course we have the CC directions etc.

Thank you

We have used the route you describe on a number of occasions without any drama or issues. I suggest you use the ACSI route search facility to detail overnight sites close to the route and then make your selection based upon your "distance travelled in a
day" preferences. On each of our visits to Fornella we have used the Caravan Club directions from the A4 - easy to follow - a number of traffic controls (lights and the like) and very busy but no big deal if you take it steady.

Fornella is one of our favourite European sites - lovely helpful owners - great beautifully maintained facilities.

Have used that route many times but more recently we go from Reims to Metz and Strasbourg before going south to Basle.

The autoroute around Strasbourg can be very busy so there is a short cut from near Metz where you can cut across to Obernai and there just happens to be an excellent and popular municipal site in Obernai which is walking distance from this attractive town. We have stayed there many times because you can easily cross Switzerland in a day and avoid expensive sites.

I go to from Calais to Basel via Lille, Namur, Luxembourg, Metz and Nancy bcause I like toll free motorways. Cheers!

Thanks for the replies so far, glad I'm not too far off the mark. Hitchglitch I will have a look at your detour and normally I would agree with you Eurotraveller, but this year we have a real need to get there asap, rather than meander down. Perhaps we will
try something different on the return leg. Thanks again to the three of you.

If you want fast, quiet route and time is more important than cost use the French motorway to Basel then on to Italy.
