We are off to the Northern tip of Lake Como in June and as we have never been to Milan we might pay it a visit but it's looking like a 2 hr drive so a long day, so anybody been there and what day might be the better choice with regards to traffic or would some kind of coach trip be better ? Thanks in advance.

Actually i'll edit this and say i know it's worth a visit but is it worth the agro of a day trip ?

Milan is  certainly worth a visit. As with nearly all Italian towns and cities the architecture is amazing. A visit to the roof of the cathederal is a must as are the numerous shopping arcades although prices are much higher than the UK.

Driving into the centre of Milan is challenging and parking can be a problem during the week. I suggest you take a train from Bellano or Lecco. The cost of a train ticket in Italy is a fraction of that in the UK and the main station in Milan is in the city
    centre.

Hi - yes do take a visit to Milan. I would suggest a bit of guidbook research beforehand to plan what you want to see there. YOu don't say where exactly you are camping but my receommendation whould be NOT to drive in to Milan but to take the train. The
nearest station to  N  Lake Como is Morbegno and you can get a train every hour in to Milano Cnetrale for  about 9 euros each way, and its quicker than driving and no hassle finding an ( expensive) parking place in Central Milan!

I stayed in Milan for a week on business and it is not a city that I rate particularly highly compared with other Italian cities, although I did manage to get to La Scala to see Tosca so for that reason alone it was memorable. Depends on your tastes.

Now, Venice, you can't keep me away from! Also like Verona.

Well we are going for it tomorrow (Saturday) it's a short car trip to Colico train station then hopefully board the 08.16 train into the city centre,  the wife has all her shopping malls sorted out wish me luck the forecast is for 33 degrees so I'll be wilting come early afternoon, still there'll be plenty of Peroni's waiting in the fridge on my return.

The fare is €16 each return including a tube pass so bargain I'd say.
