Ijmuiden to Cologne
We're off to the continent next week , going DFDS Newcastle to Amsterdam (Ijmuiden). I can't find directions from Ijmuiden to the A9 / A2, although it looks reasonably clear on the map.
Has anyone done this journey? How easy is it to get away from the port and on to the motorway? Any recommendations for the best route to Cologne?
Plan to stay a few days in Cologne and then move somewhere else - no idea where. That's all part of the adventure.
I don't have Satnav, phone, GPS or anything like that. I use good old fashioned maps and site guides.

Agree with David about sat navs & Michelin, make things far more relaxing with maps as an overview and check.
If you do go for sat nav, look for lifetime maps.
We think it is quite easy to get from the docks at IJmuiden (a couple of miles along the riverside until you reach the various motorway junctions) although, as ever, you will have to keep a close eye on signs and your maps depending on your chosen route.

Yes Hazel, I've just about grasped the workings of Google Maps and while I find them very useful, they're not as good as first hand advice from people who have done the trip.
I've got most of the route sorted and various bits of the map printed out for my navigator. I don't think I'll ever have a sat-nav. IMO, motorhomes should be as technolgy-free as possible.

The route to the Dutch motorway system is relatively straight forward from the ferry terminal but a satnav makes life so much easier, especially in towns and cities. I'm a lifelong lover of maps but when in a city a sat nav is king. Even a cheap one with european maps is worth every penny. The Stellplatz on the banks of the Rhein about 20 mins walk from Cologne center is idea but you really need a sat nav to find it.

Thanks for the replies. I've been a motorcaravanner for around 35 years and I've managed so far without a Sat Nav - I don't even have a mobile phone that will work in Europe.
I'm sort of thinking on Camping Berger in Cologne. It's outwith the Umwelt zone and I've got a good map of how to get there.
