Planning a Visit to France

Last year we went to France and did all the bookings separately ourselves and did not use Camping Cheques and it cost us a lot. This year we are limited for time (2 weeks and 3 days) and want to visit Bergerac and Royan via Portmouth/ Le Havre starting 2 July. We have an idea of which sites we would like to stay at, but we don't know whether they accept cheques and what happens when you want fully serviced pitches. The site in Royan has serviced pitches but are not available through the CC.

So please can anyone help, solve the connundrum, and also suggest an overnight near Tours?

The Camping Cheques website has a list of which campsites accept their cheques and for which dates. Around Royan the only ones are Val Vert, Chant des Oiseaux and Bois Soleil - all of which have different acceptance dates as you get into July, some with a cut off date of no later than 3 July for using cheques.

Thanks Eurotraveller, it seems the cut off date, means I cannot use cheques (from the website). It also seems, the discount for the ferrys, is dependant on buying a minimum of three cheques.

It may indeed be worth buying three cheques for certain ferry crossings (but not all) even if you don't want them - save them for next year, give them to a friend or sell them to someone else. I hope you can sort it out. Good luck.

Sometimes a ferry can be hundreds of pounds cheaper, even if you add in the cost of buying three cheques, so the saving is greater than the extra outlay.  If this is the case then as Eurotraveller suggests you can use them next year, or you could see them
on another forum (I have a friend who will probably buy them).  You may not get the full £14.95 - most people negotiate a price, but the saving, plus the sale of your cheques may mean your ferry is considerably cheaper than the cost without the cheques.

Thank you for the info. Do you have any suggestions for an overnight near Tours?

I know Tours is about the halfway mark but so lobg as you are happy with a bit of autoroute, Royan is easily doable in a day assuming you are on the overnight boat.

We stayed at Camping Les Acacias in November last year, good enough site for a night stop over. Friendly staff who speak english, good shops not too far away, easy access if required into Tours. Big pitches, clean sanfacs.

Cyberyacht we tend to keep off the motorways in order to see some of the character of France. Having spent much of my life on the M!,M6 and M25 etc I find the occasional A roads more pleasurable. However, you have made me wonder if I will arrive in Tours
    too early!!!

Just a little further than Tours is the
    Camping Municipal
at Azay Le Rideau - nice little 'town', with a view of the chateau from the site.

...Beautiful Chateau.  Well worth a stopover to visit.  The gardens are particularly good.

If you decide on Bergerac (as per your first post) - and it is a very pleasant town - I strongly recommend Camping du Chateau at Eymet (about 15 miles south of Bergerac). We have now been twice and are going again this year to meet our Dutch caravanning
friends. Philippe (the owner/manager) is a delight and speaks excellent English. The facilities are a bit tired but very well kept. There is a broad cross-section of nationalities who all mix very well - especially at the Friday "happy hour" with as much pizza
and wine as you can manage for an all-in cost of 5 euros (an absolute bargain !!). They do not take cheques but who cares at a cost of 15 euros per day for two including electric and tourist tax.

Volvo it does look a lovely site and just a few years ago would be just what we are looking for. However, due to a back and shoulders condition sadly we now use fully serviced pitches wherever possible (and pay a fortune for it) unless for overnights. It
would have been a great location as we have friends living in Eymet that we visit.
