Caravan sites near Reims and Epernay
We are looking for a site for a few days in late June to stay with a caravan and motorhome so we can visit Reims and Epernay. I have seen two, one at Chalons-en-champagne and one at Guignicourt. The one at Chalons seems to have bad report but
I was just wondering if anyone knows if it has improved or if there are any others around which I can't find.

The Chalons site is generally fine if you use your own facilities. A lot of the pitches are on gravel hardstandings and have water points. Some pictures here. Although we have not been for a while there is a nice little Municipal at Val de Vesle just south of Reims. The Municipal at Epernay is handy for the champagne houses in the town. Camping au bord de L’Aisne at Guignicourt is a nice site by the river and has been progressively improved in recent years by the new owners.

DK, hasn't the sanfacs at Chalons been re-done. I'm pretty sure ValDa posted at the begining of last year that she had seen it in the Camping cheque magazine that it was getting a makeover
We stayed there in 2014 twice and while they were a bit dated they were always clean and lots of hot water, way better than another site that many use (no names)
To the OP, there was a few bad reports about Chalons at the end of 2014 due to grape pickers living and working from the site October time, not sure how things are now as we haven't been there for awhile. We found it fine in May 2014.

I posted this on your thread on another forum:
There is a municipal site in Epernay itself (click for link). Where exactly are you looking to find sites, as there are
many more in and around the area? There are municipal sites nearby in Val de Vesle, and in Dormans. Have a look at www.camping-municipal.org for others, or if you want privately owned sites, then check out the
Eurocampings website (part of the ACSI organisation) at http://www.eurocampi...mpagne-ardenne/0 -
ValDa - we are going at the end of June and would like to be close to Epernay and Reims.

The site at Guignicourt is excellent and very popular for overnight stops as it is clean and tidy and quite close to the motorway. The only criticism I have is that it is quite expensive; I can't remember exactly but I think around 26 Euros (no acsi) for
outfit and two adults. This is probably because they have an enclosed heated pool although this is mainly used by inhabitants of the statics.0 -
I've used Challon-en-Champagne for years and have always found it quite adequate for our needs(usually a short stay) - it will be our final stop before Blackhorse Farm this coming summer. One plus, is the boulangerie just at the top of the road - some excellent bread! It suits us to have a gravel hardstanding with the option of water hook-up. It is also fairly close to the supermarket.

It would be useful if on your return you could let us know how things are on the Chalons site david. We stayed there in May 2014 on 2 occasions and liked it. Later that year it had some bad reviews, but I noticed on UKcampsites there is a post that says
the toilet blocks have had a make over and are much better, not that I had a problem with them anyway, its more to do with the reports about workers/locals that were on the site causing trouble. Would be nice to think that this has been dealt with, as you
say good site well placed.0 -
We too are fond of the Chalons site and have used it for over 25 years on and off. Completely agree with David about the bakery - the pastries are to die for! We are planning to stop there en route to the Alps later in the year

Afternoon all
Camping Au Bord de L'Aisne is €28.00 in low season or €29.60 in July and August if you book direct.
The Caravan Club price if pre-booking is £20.00 or £21.14
Write your comments here...If you book direct the owner gives a full refund when you are burgled. Is this the same if you book through the club at the reduced rate ?

Morning Bobr2112
The site was targeted by thieves on the 11th May 2013, and site refunded the fees for those that were affected, they would have done this for direct bookings and also bookings that were made through the Club. Since 2013 there have been no other
security issues on site. The owners Didier and Caroline live on site, and are available 24/, they also have two security cameras and a security barrier, they have taken as many precautions as they can, but it is impossible to make any campsite a 100% secure.

Hello Hazel,
Are you sure the burglars were around on the 11th May?
They were certainly there on the 8th and again on the 13th, there was much jabbering and many gendarmes on both occasions so if it happened on the 11th as well it passed off very quietly.

Hi Bobr2112
I was looking at the dates on our e-mail correspondence with the campsite, so not 100% sure of the exact dates, but it was “around” the 11th May. Sorry I should have used “around” in my first post!
Also noticed I left of the "7" on my previous post, it should read: Didier and Caroline are available 24/7. Not 24.
Must read my posts a second time whilst there is still the option to edit them!
