Chartres site

I was planning to stop at the Chartres municipal site  as a one-night stop over between Calais and the Dordogne at beginning of June. But the reviews I have read are mixed to say the least with toilets and itinerants cropping up as criticisms. Has anyone
been there in the last 12 months? Alternative site suggestions within 25 miles of Chartres would be appreciated.

We stayed in July last year, its fine for an overnight but we wouldn't have wanted to stay any longer. Some outfits didn't unhitch.

Used our own facilities so can't comment on the toilets.  There were a lot of workers using the site as their base.

I would not recommend staying there as the last time we were there a lady's handbag was stolen whilst she was showering, also on that same visit we were hitching up to leave and two Eastern European looking blokes came out of the undergrowth and offered help to a Dutch couple who were also hitching up to leave, I could see what was about to happen so I called out to warn them, these blokes were stood behind the Dutchman, one of them was holding a Torch about 18 inches long that I am sure he was going to use as a cosh. I went up to the Office and told the miserable Warden and he sent someone with two vicious Alsations but they had long gone by the time the dogs arrived

So beware, safer to stay at the Municipal under Nonacourt in the CC European Directory

    We have stayed
    here
at a campsite called Camping Les Ilots de St Val which is not too far from Chartres. Its between  Maintenon and Nogent le Roi.

It's over 12 months since we stayed there, but I wouldn't go back in a hurry.  Some years ago it was much better and we have stayed there for a couple of nights to visit the cathedral.  But that was well over 10 years ago now.  Last time we stayed was 2014
and the toiletblock had really gone downhill in cleanliness; a lot of the pitches were covered in mud and there were some dubious-looking characters around.

We've also stayed at the site DK above mentions, as well as the one recommended by TheAdmiral, which is in

    St Remy sur Avre
, if you haven't got the European Sites Guide.

We stayed there a few years ago, but it's on our 'Not to go back to' list.  The wardens were unpleasant, the site was neglected with long grass, broken fences, and the toilet blocks were falling apart - things like rotten door frame bottoms, no locks on
some doors, cracks in one sink, taps not working, and they were dirty.  Ok the dirt could be blamed on the weather which wasn't good, but the neglect and rot couldn't.

Until I read some 'Under new management' and better reviews we shan't go back, convenient as it is for our trips.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Seems strange that it remains in the ACSI network and the description in the handbook paints such a lovely picture of the site. Still, will now stop elsewhere and will consider one of the two suggested stop-over sites
not far away. What about Orleans which might be as far as I want to drive in a day having left home at 3.30am? Any recommended sites in that area?

We stopped at Chartres end of October 2016. The site is all grass & we ended up pitching on a road due to the soft ground and so few campers before the site closed. All the above comments were evident but location is fantastic for visitung the Cathedral which is well worth the visit. I would use it again as a stop over if it suited me but it would not be my first choice. Regards, Roy

We tend to stop at Salbris, about 40 miles South of Orleans, lovely site on a lake, if you stop for more than one night it is worth visiting the Matra Museum at Romorantin-Lanthenay, you can pick up details in reception.

Another site worth consudering is at Nouan le Fuzelier, anothe site on a lake, both sites in ACSI

Ah, the tempting descriptions and pictures.  I never believe them, being a suspicious soul, but I read reviews as they are more realistic than a guide, be it an ACSI guide or otherwise.  They're in the business of selling sites and so wouldn't describe that
site how it really is, in the case of the Chartres site.

I think it remains in ACSI because it's a very convenient place to stopover - particularly with the Dutch who've set off from Holland that day.

    People recommend the site at
    Olivet
which is just a little south of Orleans.

We've stayed at the sites recommended by Admiral, above.

I can echo The Admiral's comments having stopped at both of those sites. Orleans is worth visiting.
