Wild Atlantic Way - anyone done it?

Hi all, have had 2 years touring around UK. We have booked ferry crossings late may and intend on spending 20 days exploring the 'Wild Atlantic Way' Irelands west coast, roughly 1500 miles. Have seen itinenary for 20 day trip on irish website, but it does
look a bit of a tough slog. would appreciate any comments advice and experiences from members who have condered this trip.

    We did it some years ago but by car staying in small hotels, was driving a Range Rover at the time and really enjoyed the trip, didnt find any issues with the roads, The Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula were stunning and we found the locals welcoming
    and friendly, Food was good prices reasonable and overall had a great holiday.

    thanks for your response, another question, is it possible to tour without booking sites in rep. Ireland. How busy is it?

    http://www.ireland.com/en-gb/wild-atlantic-way/    I can vouch for the bit of it round Clifden in County Galway, having been there last year.   It's beautiful scenery, but the roads can be a tad narrow, if you're towing you'll probably get some good reversing practise in.

    The Dingle Peninsula is beautiful, particularly the Conor Pass.  But, a warning, do the pass in your car only.  The road is good but due to a narrow part at the top there are vehicle restrictions and caravans are prohibited.  Sandy Bay, Green Acres and Anchor
    are three caravan sites on the north side of the peninsula, I haven't stayed at any of them so can't say what they are like.

    Hello and welcome from Northern Ireland. May I first of all ask what Ferry crossings you are using? The Wild Atlantic Way is a new idea to encourage tourists and it really is not necessary to try to cover the whole of it.  If you are arriving in Rosslare then I would cover Cork, Kerry, and if you have time left head up the coast towards Galway.  Campsites should not be that busy unless it is a Bank holiday weekend but the dates may be differerent in Ireland to the U.K.   We in Northern Ireland have also a beautiful coastline and many excellent campsites and CLS. And of course the Giant's Causeway and beautiful Co. Antrim. This is also a Sterling zone. Co. Donegal in the Republic is also beautiful.  I would not try to cover the whole of Ireland or even the Wild Atlantic Way in two weeks.

    once again thanks for the feedback, it's making us think again about doing too much driving to see as much as possible rather than perhaps concentrating on say county Kerry up to Donegal town and spend a little time in each spot before moving on.

    We travelled quite a distance over two weeks on what we discovered was the Wild Atlantic Way.  They were installing many of the brown signs at the time!

    It's very wild, very remote and very beautiful. Yes some of the roads are narrow / slow, but from our experience you won't meet much traffic.

    We had no problems in a big 8m motorhome, just a couple of small loops down to the coast and back that really were only suitable for a car.

    If you're in a motorhome you'll be made very welcome to stop overnight in most places, just ask at the local TIC or pub / restaurant.  Enjoy.

    We did from Kerry to Giants Causeway towing a twin axle over 3 weeks last July. There were sections where we sited the caravan and used the tow car on some narrow roads. Even some main roads in the south can be very uneven making 30-40 mph about the max
    you can do. We did not book in advance as we wanted to keep out trip flexible but had no problem as there was always plenty of spare pitches. Many sites charge seperately for EHU and we found that there were great pitches on the edge of sites next to the sea
    if you could manage without hooking up.
