Am travelling early August by ferry from Rosslare, Ireland to Roscoff, then travelling with car and van onto Biarritz.  Can anyone recommend a stop-over for one night?   Thanks     pinley

Could you please say what time your ferry arrives, how far you want to drive that day, and where you would like your stop over to be.

Hopefully ferry arrives at 11.30, hope to travel for approx. 4 hours. Campsite close to route.

I usually get to Nantes in four hours - that's 200 miles from Roscoff. The city site there, Camping Le Petit Port,  is well equipped and modern! and worth a second night there to see the city.

If you want to stop 20 miles short of Nantes, then Camping Le Chateau at Blain is only a short diversion from the main road. And if you want to go on about 40 miles further than Nantes then Camping Le Patis at Les Essarts is a good overnight stop too.

We have stayed HERE on our journey south.   It is a very pleasant looking site just north of Nantes on the route between Nantes and Saint Nazaire but we have only stayed there in January so we cannot comment what it will be like in August.

In the past I've done the journey a few times, both ways, in one trip. However, that was arriving at Roscoff late at night, sleeping on the Quay/car park and setting off at around 7.00am.  The last time I went from Roscoff straight to Biarritz I stopped at Venise Vert, near Niort but that's a bit far for you setting off nearer midday.

I've no experience of suitable sites nearer but I would aim to get south of Nantes on your first day.  The two places on your trip that have the potential to hold you up for a considerable amount of time are Nantes and Bordeaux.  It's taken me around 2 hours to get around both on occasions.

I would agree with that  -Roscoff to south of Nantes is an easy first day drive, and then plan to traverse Boreaux at about 1 pm when its quite due to most French drivers being at lunch!
