EHIC - App

Quite a useful App.

Although most of the stuff on there we perhaps already know, one useful feature is that you can put in the expiry date of your present card and it will notify you when renewal is due. Quite helpful for something that is so easily forgotten.

Is it the EHIC - App or the EHIC - Travel Safe App? It seems to be the latter that is editable to put in details of your own card. Perhaps the EHIC - App did not load properly but all I have is information and don't seem to have any editable areas?

    Harry

I am not sure mine loaded correctly as all I get is info. But having discovered the other app it seems to do the same. I hope their suggestion that showing it on your phone is the same as producing the actual card!!  I say that because I have been reading
a book about travelling on the Italian rail system. The author explained how he purchased his ticket online and when the ticket collector came he showed him his ticket on his laptop (would now be an app on his phone) The ticket collector said that it was the
rules that even if you have proof on your computer you must also print it off to produce it on the train and as a result got a fine!!! Maybe Italy has changed!!!

    David,

The App is not a substitute for the card.

    Quote from card

"The EHIC App is not a replacement or alternative to the card. The App is only a guide on how to use the card".

I just put up the post to suggest by having the App might be a good way of alerting you to it's renewal.

If all it does is act as a reminder, surely most people have some sort of diary on their computer which can be used for reminders without recourse to yet another app.

I suppose if you download the app for the information, you might as well use the reminder functionality. The advantage of having the info as an app, rather than a pdf, is that it can automatically be kept up to date. So quite a useful tool.

I think that when getting older anything that aids memory is a good idea. Aftèr all, before computers, people used to use a knot in their hanky. Happy

You have got to be a bit careful though, I have several regular reminders set on my pad, so when a longer term one activates, it is possible to overlook it.

As Red Pennant messed us up with cover, we have unrestricted cover with EHIC-Plus, covers most existing problems

What is EHIC- Plus. There is no mention of this.

The App clearly states, "The EHIC is NOT an alternative to travel insurance".

"It does not cover any private health care or costs towards return flights to your home country".

So that tells me it is no substitute for proper travel insurance which of course Red Pennant is

We must be old fashioned, and just write our renewal date on our calendar, and carry it forward from year to year.  Same thing with out bus passes, library cards, etc!

EHIC Plus is 'top up' insurance, which covers you for all the things not covered by your EHIC (allegedly)!  I suppose this  may be fine if the 'not covered' items are expensive, but from experience most things not covered are smaller item such as prescriptions costs, crutches, etc.

Does EHIC Plus include repatriation costs. If not I  think I would still want RP.

EHIC Plus is a travel insurance with no affiliation to the department of health. They provide cover for things not covered by EHIC. Generally they they are good at providing cover for pepole with pre-existing conditions.

    Here's what EHIC PLUS  covers:

    • Emergency repatriation up to £2 million
    • Hospital benefit and doctor call-out
    • Cancellation and Curtailment up to £5,000
    • Delays and loss of baggage
    • Hijack, mugging, pets and much more
    • Cover available for most pre-existing medical conditions
    • Over 100 adventure sports included
    • 14 days money back guarantee

As I said, try claiming for prescription cost, a visit to A and E, or a visit to a doctor - all of which you  have to pay for in some countries.  Some of the small things not covered by your EHIC Card can add up to a substantial amount!  As can some of the larger things!

A friend had a heart attack in the Pyrenees, had to be airlifted off a mountain, flown to a local hospital, transferred to the 'centre of excellence, had treatment, recovery, rehabilitation with physiotherapy, and had to be flown back to England with an air ambulance with nurse escort.  All this was covered by his £12.00 (not EHIC Plus) travel insurance.  His actuall bill would have required taking out a second mortgage.
