Where to go?

I know you lovely people will love to help me decide where to go.

We have the whole of July off and was wondering where in Europe was the best place to go?

1. Do we go down to Bilbao and make our way through France back to Calais?

2. Dover to Calais then on to the French and Swiss Alps?

3. Dover to Calais and down to the Dordogne?

We dont want to be driving every day.

We like cycling.

Routes, sites etc would be helpfull if people have time to help.

And also would we have to book in advance these sites with it being July?

    Hi. I know all the places you mention but Idon't know much about you.

    If you are someone who likes the sea and beaches then follow plan no. 1 and come up the western coast of France.

    If you are fit and strong cyclists then follow plan no. 2

    if you want scenery, pretty villages, a lazy river and many thousands of tourists for company the it's plan 3.

    We ourselves will do none of those and will instead  go back to the inland part of Provence. The well known popular sites there do need booking for the second half of July, the smaller, simpler out the way ones don't.  I hope it goes well for you.

    You mention Europe but seem to be confining yourself to France. If you are open to further suggestions Germany, Austria and Italy might be worth consideration?

    The Netherlands is cycling heaven and Germany does quite well for cycleways.

    Like others, it's difficult to advice as your choices are so different.  Firstly, are there just two of you - or do you have children with you?

    From experience I would suggest you go wherever the weather is best - from choice 2 and 3 or 4, 5 o 6 - with a Calais crossing, or if you don't mind the cost of a Bilbao crossing, then included choice 1 too!

    If you don't mind smaller sites then you could just meander down to wherever the weather is bet, stopping wherever you feel like, and 'doing' that area - cycling, sight-seeing, and relaxing, until you feel inclined to move on.  There are so many small sites in France that it's almost always possible to find somewhere to stay - although not as easy if you have children who want pool complexes, children's club, and entertainment.  

    Don't forget there is always 'next year' for those choices you left out this year.
