Budgies abroad

We will be taking the caravan to France,Switzerland and Italy this year. I know all about taking a dog abroad but we propose to take our budgie with us, He travels in the car quite happily!

Are there any legal restrictions on doing this? I would not expect that there are since many birds make their own way down there each year!

Ps. Before anyone asks, no he isn't microchipped !

I know someone who travels in a motorhome, with a parrot.  They're from Guernsey so I'm not sure if they're subject to the same 'pet travel' arrangements.............!

I have seen budgies in cages on caravan sites - and a parakeet on a lead on a man's shoulder in a supermarket in Perpignan!

I did find this which may help - and which may lead to other sources of information:

And this from the Brttany Ferries, which states that you don't need any documentation other than an export certificate from your vet - so no microchip needed!

Have a look at the GOV.UK web site, "travelling abroad with pets," I don't think there are restrictions on pet birds in the EU but it's worth checking out.

Many thanks for the above. It would appear that budgies are specifically excluded from other rules relating to birds.

The other bird am taking doesn't have a dad so I should be ok there too.

do the countries you are visiting or passing through have any regulations, you need to check before you arrive at their customs control ?

I don't think we've arrived at 'Customs Control' in Europe since as long as I can remember.  We certainly did in the 1970's and I do remember a border crossing into Spain, I think probably in 1984, but I don't remember much after that.  Switzerland apparently
joined Schengen in 2009 - so even there is no problem any more.
