Travel insurance

Does anyone know of a company that offers travel insurance tailored to those of us with motorhome or caravans?

Most standard travel insurance policies cover things such as flight delays and cancellations which do not apply to motorhomes or caravans.

Basically we are only looking for medical cover, we have separate breakdown cover which gets the van back home if needed. Most of our personal possessions are covered by our household insurance.

I have found that The Camping and Caravanning Club consistently has offered the same level of cover at a more competetive price.

Reports from members of both clubs who have needed to access the respective cover seem to equally praise the companies.

If you get a Flexplus current account from Nationwide, you will get free travel insurance for Europe. As the account is fee-free and is always very well reviewed it seems pointless to do anything else, especially as profits from Nationwide are retained within
the business rather than paying shareholders and providing huge bonuses to directors etc.

Cover for pre-existing conditions may  cost extra.

We inquired about the Nationwide Flexplus account however if you have pets travelling with you it is a non starter as they do not repatriate pets which they regard as "livestock".

We are looking for an alternative to Red Pennant because although they are excellent, if you go to the Continent twice a year it works out for us at about £450 a year just for the cover and before you even think of ferry prices.  I hate to think of the price
if you are fortunate enough to do a long stay in warmer climes for 60 or more days!

They most certainly do which makes it very expensive. I was quoted £250 to cover the conditions we have between us for 31 days cover. Our trip to France last year cost £165 with Red Pennant for 31 days. OK the Nationwide would have allowed us any number
of trips of 31 days rather than a single trip.

I go twice a year and spend 122 days in total. For this we use the Red Pennant long stay option which last year was £350.and covers the days away rather than number of trips Are your trips longer than that in total?

We would probably be going twice a year totalling about 60 days.  How do you find out about the longer stays as we intend going in May and then again in October for about 4 weeks each time as it costs a fortune to put the cats in the cattery?

Yes, do check the small print, especially relating to pre-existing medical conditions, they will certainly cost extra.  Also check the length of any trip covered, if you want to go for longer than 31 days, as a lot of travel insurance only covers a maximum of 31 days.

We have just realised that with our Flexaccount we only require Motoring cover and not personal cover as that comes free with a Flexaccount.  We would upgrade to the Flexplus but still remain unsure what they cover in the evnet of a mishap and you have to
    change ferry dates.

If you phone the Nationwide they will either tell you about this or put you onto the insurers. We had reservations re the size of our van but spoke to them and we were given written assurance that we were covered.

The shipping length of our UK built caravan, a Buccaneer is 8.14m so 14mm over 8m.  Somehow I doubt if they will worry about 14mm or 1.4cm.

As far as I am aware the FlexPlus account is not fee free but costs £10 per month. However you will offset some of this if you keep £2500 in the account as this will earn 3% gross interest.

With regard to length of caravan there is a limit of 8 metres so best check with provider as you don't want an argument when you ring them up and they decline to pick you up.
