Cologne

I'm thinking about a trip to Cologne in mid-April. There are a couple of sites beside the Rhine - Camping Berger

and Campingplatz der Stadt Koln. (I've stayed in the second one many years ago, but recent reviews are not great).

Anyone got recent experience of either site??

never stayed at either, but during my last visit I seem to remember a stellplatz beside the river within walking distance of the cathedral and city centre.

Dianne (BTW, that's the same spelling as my wife's name), I do not have an ACSI book, but I do have the club's 'Touring Europe' book, which I tend to use (+ the internet).

Oneputt, I know where you mean. There's a short term motorhome halt - a sort of PAYG affair.

    The Stellplatz link is below.

There is no ACSI site listed in the book.

Google 'Camping Cologne' will give a few options.

The Google option always gives lots of information and is certainly my first check no matter where I am visiting. It's also instant!!!!!!!!!

PS. There is no time limit on the Stellplatz!

Funny enough, Google was the first place I looked and I've found that there are two sites convenient for Cologne. However, the reviews were mostly a couple of years old and the more recent ones were not too good.  Hence my question - did anyone have recent
    experience of either site?

So far, it seems "no".  Looks like I'll take my chances.  I'm going mid-April and hopefully it will be a tad quieter than in summer.

Be careful. Whilst I have no experience of the campsites you've asked about, my wife has stayed in Cologne centre, near the cathedral, for an overnight stop whilst undertaking a train holiday with her mother for the last 2 years and states that she will
not do so again due to the amount of ne'er-do-wells hanging around the area. She wasn't at all surprised by the assaults that took place on New Years Eve and had already vowed never to stay there again, so take care. I hope your trip goes without a hitch but
    be vigilant.

In May 2014 we went to Cologne (Koln) we didn't stay in Cologne itself but further out at Bruhle, Campsite

Heider Bergsee. We just stayed for 2 nights, it has some permanent residents on site as most German campsites do and is situated on a lake (Bergsee). The facilities were nice and clean and it was an easy 15min  to walk to the tram line to get a tram into Cologne,
probably the best way to do it, its only a few euro. Would this site be of any help to you, it can be viewed on the main ACSI Eurocampings site, not the discount one, price rangers from 20€ - 25€

We stayed at the stellplatz on the banks of the Rhein for a few nights in April 2015. Its about a 25 minute walk into the centre or a short train ride (from the staion across the road form the site). The stellplatz is well organised and is handy for shops and a restaurants. I'd recommend it for a short stay.

We have stayed on that site, but not recently and only ever in December for the Xmas markets.  We've always found it ok, but pitches do seem to be fairly close together, which in December isn't a problem as the site was always more than half empty.  What it would be like in summer, I wouldn't know, but if most, or all, pitches were occupied it would seem (too) crowded for me.

Stayed at Camping Berger last Easter and apart from some pitches being very muddy we found the site was very good. On the banks of the Rhine but to reach the centre of Cologne involves a bus trip to the train station and from there train into the main station.

Not if you have bikes with you; it's a very good cycle-path all the way from the site, along the river, into the centre of Cologne.
