Esterel caravaning site

We are looking at this site at St Raphael/Agay on the Côte d'Azur for an extended visit in May/June this year. It claims to be a 5* but there are some mixed reviews regarding shower blocks. Does anybody know this site? Also are there any recommendations
for other sites in the area say at Rocquebrune or Cavallaire?

Hi Esterel is a lovely site and the shower blocks are fine ,just ask for a larger pitch on the first row and you will have plenty of space Don't go down along the bottom rows as they a little tight to turn along the site roads My advise is walk to your pitch
first and plan you route ! (If you go on their own web site there should be a site plan ) Look out for the wild boars ! outside of the site of course ! Enjoy

I don't have any knowledge of Esterel but we tend to stay in the Frejus/Argens area.  Roquebrune-sur-Argens is close.  In 2014 we stayed at Camping L'Etoile d'Argens.  It's certainly not the cheapest of sites and it is an 'all singing/ dancing' site -also very large, but you certainly can't fault the swimming pool complex (incl. jacuzzi's).  We found the toilet blocks OK, but I get the impression that they do vary (there are several).  After saying that, we did use our own facilities quite a lot.  I think most pitches are full serviced (water hook-up and drainage), so this suited us.  There is also a free boat which runs from the site down the Argens to the beach - this is an attraction to many.

I'm just looking at sites in the area for this summer and L'Etoile D'Argens will certainly be on our list again.  I shall also look at the one at Roquebrune-sur-Argens too and might look at Esterel.

Do you particularly want 'all-singing, all-dancing' sites?

We stayed at Esterel years ago, in the school holidays, and it was too full on for me!.  It's a site well used by tour operators, and tours, and we found it crowded and noisy (and we were used to holidaying during school holidays at that time).

However, it is a very long time ago, won't be the same in low season, and it may well have changed since then.  I see you can have a Palace de Luxe Pitch with your own bathroom, jacuzzi, dishwasher, and washing machine................................!  Only
€420 to €630 euros per week, plus €3.60 per person per day!  Mind you it wouldn't matter about the reviews of the shower block then!

No ValDa not really my scene either financially or socially. We know the area well having lived by Nice for many years and one daughter still lives there. So we need to be reasonably nearby. We are now veering towards Cavalaire, a bit further away, but a
few more nice sites in the ACSI books than the Esterel. We have stayed at  Mandelieu in the past but it is expensive and very noisy with private jets/Helios, trains and autoroutes nearby. I would still welcome any more specific recommendations in that area
    of Provence.

Well from another forum, Le Vaudois at Roquebrune, not quite so far out of your area as Cavalaire,  comes highly recommended.  It's an ACSI Card site at just 13 euros, it's quiet, and to get a flavour, here is a review:

We arrived here, intending to stay 2 nights and ended up staying 14.

The small site is run by the family owners and has been for 30 years. There is intense pride in everything they do. The immaculate sanitaires, which Madame cleans 3 times a day, have many personal touches like smiley face shampoo holders in the showers. The water is generally hot.

The pitches vary, some near the play area are enclosed by mature hedging and others, under the pine trees are more open. All have 10amp ehu

There is a large covered area near the reception where everyone did their wifi and eat the chips that Madame's grandson would do on a Thursday evening

There is a large heated swimming pool and boules pitches.

There is no evening entertainment laid on but we all seem to congregate around the long communal table. ( boring for teenagers!). The site is secured at 10. Oo pm by a fort knox type electronic gate.

Nearby in Frejus there is a large Carrefour, about 5 kms away. Roquebrunne, , itself is about the same distance away in the opposite direction. It is very easy to cylcle into either place. There are also many fine walks on Les Petits Maures which give you views of the whole coast from Cap Antibe down to St Tropez.

For the first time in all our camping years, we bought a bunch of flowers for Madame when we left.

I must admit to having added it to my list of sites to visit when next in the area.

We have friends who live in La Croix Valmer, and Cavalaire was somewhere we spent part of many camping/caravanning holidays when our children were younger, but it's a while since we caravanned in the area. We used to like Camping de la Baie, until one time we had an awful pitch with a 'cliff' down to the next level, (we complained and to be fair it was re-landscaped the following year), we also liked Bonporteau, and Cros de Mouton.  Friends liked Selection Camping - but these holidays were outside peak season, and perhaps now, looking back, I think the attraction was mainly that our friends used to join us for the day, and we spent many happy times together.

ValDa that looks really good. I think it's my kind of site. I love the Roquebrune area. Although it has been developed a lot since I birdwatched there in the 80s and 90s it still has a real Provence feel about it. I think this might be the site for us. Thank
you for putting me on to it.

We stayed at L'Esterel some years ago (out of season) and had a pitch with its own bathroom - very nice.  Pleasant site, nice pools.
