Best route around Paris

Hi

We are traveling down to Argeles Sur Mer, south of France for our summer holiday in July. We have a couple of stops planned on the way down and on the return. Our first stop will be in Orléans. We travelled to the south last year planned the route using
tom tom, which wanted to route through Paris, however we took the Rouen,Evreux route. The route was quite slow and busy and with two small boys in the back, you can imagin. On the way home followed the route via Paris, around the Peripherique. Not for the
faint hearted but we did I it and it was busy. Routing via Michilen wants to take you through the same route. Can anyone suggest a motorway route around Paris avoiding the Peripherique

The A104 or 'Francilienne', which is the outer outer ring road.  Have a look on a map and you'll see it goes off the A1 (which you'll use from Calais) at the junction near Charles de Gaulle airport, and runs in a loop to the east of Paris, south around near to Disneyland, and then west to join up with the A7 for Burgundy and the Rhone Valley and then the A10 for the Dordogne and Languedoc areas.

Or use the A86 which is the 'inner' outer ring road and signposted Bordeaux.

Switch the sat nav off. After you pass the airport on the approach to Paris turn off following big signposts saying Bordeaux.  Follow them. At first It's the A3 and then becomes the A86.  When you are well clear of Paris switch the sat nav on again.

The problem with the routes that circumnavigate fairly close into Paris is that, depending on the time of day, they will generally be busier than going via Rouen. Rouen itself is usually pretty slow going, certainly during the week but its over a relatively short distance. I appreciate the the N154 is not all dual carriage  and has a couple of pinch points. An alternative is the A28 which is further west than the N154 but is usually quite quiet but perhaps not as convenient for where you want to stopover.

Admiral.  That's the route I always use but the OP tried it last year and found it slow and busy.  Still it's the one I would recommend.  Only used the outer periferique once going north many years ago and had to stop just north of Paris to calm my nreves
    down!!!!

By autoroute Calais, Rheims, Dijon, Lyon, Nimes. approaching Lyon follow Lyon signs straight thru the middle, don't go miles round on detour signposted for south. Avoid rush hours tho.

I must admit I'm not a lover of the Francilliene either. You need your wits about you for getting in the correct lane and not missing turnoffs.

Thanks for the replies, If we come down the A1 and then onto the A86 does this route have any height restrications, I think I read on this forum one side has a height limit, Or is the outer ring route the A104 a better option.

The A86 on the west side of Paris has a height restricted tunnel, but on the east side does not.

If you think the "outer periferique " will make you need to stop to calm down, try THE periferique.  Now that is fun (insert own definition of the word fun).  Done it a couple of times (still not sure why the second time) and survived. Certainly you need to keep your wits about you and remember to move out a lane after every junction

Bewick, Have also used the THE Periferique many times as we used to live in France.  I now avoid both like the plague!  However, if you must use it your keeping to second lane is correct as if you stay in the inside one you will just be pushed off at the
next port! The Orleans, Chatres, etc route is being improved and there is that Leclerk fuel stop on it at just about the right distance from either Channel ports or the south.

Yes, Comeyras, I also avoid it at all costs.  Now use the Rouen route as often recommended by Val for the south and  west or go well east if going to the alps
