Travelling from Calais to Sweden first time abroad
We are planning to drive to Stockholm in September from Calais and are wondering what do to when it comes to stopping overnight on route. Can you stop anywhere and overnight or should we book sites before we leave?. Only we are not sure how long we wish
to stay at various places so booking could be difficult. Any advice would be much appreciated. We have never motorhomed abroad before.

Certainly no need to book, but sites open in Sweden in September might be fewer than in summer, though south of Stockholm there will be more open than further north.
Get the ACSI card and look at camping.se website for lots of sites. camping.se also has a good booking system should you wish to book.
( Also check out the offers if you buy your camping card from them. )
There are of course also MH aires, you would need to research those (we are caravanners), plus in Sweden you can wild camp, though not so easy in the south.
Some picnic areas on the main roads have water, waste and toilet emptying facilities.
If using sites, you are advised to have a "Camping Key Europe", which replaced the Scandinavian Camping Card.
Which route are you taking? We usually go via the bridge and return via the ferry, or vice versa. The ferry is very reasonable if booked well in advance.

By ferry, I mean the one between Trelleborg and Sassnitz. There are also ferries from the Danish islands to Germany.
There are tolls on the 2 bridges in Denmark, and of course the Oresund bridge. Central Stockholm also has a congestion charge.
