Vignets
Im after a bit of help please. In August we are travelling from mid east France through to Austria but only for 4 days (3 night) before we go to Italy. So I have 2 questions: Can you buy these there or "on line" & I presume before we enter Austria? Which do you buy as I'm towing a caravan?

The Austrian Vignets can be purchased from most filling stations before the border. Last year they cost about 7 euros. You do not need one for the caravan. Some people have said that if you don't travel on the motorways they are not needed, but I've always
played safe and for such a relatively small amount it gives "peace of mind".We too are heading for Italy this year but it will be in May/June. Our intention is to cross the alps by means of the Brenner Pass to reach Lake Garda and ultimately Florence.

You can usually get them at the border, or at many gas stations close to the border. My guess is you will follow the north shore of Lake Constance and cross the border at Bregenz. Here you are in Switzerland for about 30 seconds, then there is a huge office
at the Austrian border where you can buy your vignettehttp://goeurope.about.com/od/austria/qt/vignette-austria.htm
No extra for a caravan,

There is a company called Toll Tickets that sell vignettes for a variety of countries. Obviously they add a service charge to the base price although this is not excessive in my experience. However it is pretty easy to buy them just before you get bto Austria from Service Stations. If you let us know where you are crossing into Austria I am sure someone will be able to tell you where to buy them. They are sold where you see a red sign with a black griffen type picture on them.

Steve you will just need the 1o day Vignette it is 8.80 Euro's very little compared with France. Enjoy your 4 days in Austria it is the most beautiful Country in Europe to my mind and certainly the cleanest.and friendliest we have been to out of the 14 in Europe we have visited. While in that Innsbruck area take a ride up the Fernpasse into Germany to Fussen to view the Neuswannstein Castle and the lovely town of Garmisch Partenkirchen..
You will also be passing through the 14 km long Arlbergtunnel on S16 which is open again till 18th April 2017 the charge is 9.50 Euro's for Single Passage.

This post brought back sour memories. Travelling from Croatia we bought vignettes for Slovenia and other countries however we could NOT find a service station that sold them for Austria, my outfit sailed on through an OLd Customs check point where there
was a small shack selling them, no chance of doing a handbrake turn, so carried on intending to bye one at the next service station. No chance, Dick Turpin was pulling dozens of us in within 200 yards of that check point. I offered to walk back but NO we had
been caught and was fined a massive 150 euro's. Needless to say I'm not in any hurry to go back to Austria, even though its a lovely country.0 -
No just for Autobahns BUT if there is a diversion on the road you are on and it takes you on a motorway you are in Trouble.
They often check on exit points.
Ther is no excuse for not having one on all entrances into Austria there are plenty of Petrol Stations, Service Areas on the approach on minor roads and on the Autobahns big Customs Offices. All have the sign as David K posted above.
