Superb Sanitary Blocks and Private Bathrooms
On the other thread in UK Sites - Sites Pricing there is a 'side' discussion going on about sanitary facilities, and private bathrooms. I have a list of sites with private bathrooms (which needs updating so I'll work on it) and know of others with absolutely superb sanitary blocks. Private bathrooms doesn't necessarily mean 'superb' - sometimes they are just a wooden chalet with toilet, shower and washing up sink - but superb means the sort of block such as the newest one at L'Amfora at St Pere Pescador, which is really five star hotel quality.
Often these are sites which are in the 'discount schemes' accepting either the ACSI Card or Camping Cheques in low season (and in some cases both) so prices can be very reasonable. Sometimes there is a supplement on top of the discount price for the private facilities, but sometimes they are included. At least one person in the other thread has indicated that would be interested to see a list. If there is general interest then I'll update my list and post details on here.

We have caravanned in France for 19 years (many of those in Brittany). The best facilities by far that we have come across are at Le Moulin de l'Eclis near Asserac in Pays de la Loire. They are not private in the sense of individual units on each pitch but
are all in one block - but nevertheless are really excellent. As a bonus, the owners are very pleasant and the site is right beside the sea. And it's ACSI (no. 1450 for 2016)

Not a private bathroom but a whole private toilet shower block.
We arrived at the site at Mornay sur Allier - no visitors, so the local council decided employing a warden was wholly uneconomic, but a few local volunteers were keeping the site going. Gate was open when we arrived, absolutely no one there , toilet block locked, but electric points working, so we hooked up and went out to see the garden at Apremont. A bit of phoning when we got back and a man in a van came with keys and proudly showed us the toilet block - not as smart as Amfora, but tiled, sparkling, spotless and immaculate. Just for us.
He locked it again in the morning when we left.

This
site in Italy has some private facilities. We much prefer to use our own facilities so would not pay extra but they are there for those that like that sort of thing. We have been on several sites in Germany where you can hire individual shower/toilet facilities
in the main block for the duration of your stay.David

Val, or anyone, we would be interested in info for France as thinking we may head there this spring (May/June). Germany would be of interest too, particularly the Rhine and Black Forest areas.
Not that bothered about a private bathroom on the pitch, we have good faciliyies in the van, but would be interested in sites that have high quality "unisex" all-in-one shower rooms or disabled facilities, as OH needs my assistance with showering.
Essential features are adequate space, decent heating, and above all, a shower head that is NOT fixed.
The latter seems to be very difficult to find. And very difficult to get that information beforehand.
ACSI card site, or off peak price up to 20 euros. Will be venturing as far south as Millau.

I'm working on it at the moment KjellNN and have a list of around 82 sites with private facilities, many of them ACSI Card sites - BUT only one or two mention that you may get a private washroom as part of the ACSI fee - on others you may have to pay a supplement, and on yet others the private bathroom option won't be available at all to those using a discount scheme.
As far as your particular requirements are concerned, if you use the 'Eurocampings' website Advanced search and go down to Toilet facilities, there are all sorts of bathroom options you can search for - have a look and see what you think.
In the meantime I'll continue to work on my list this evening, and will let you know in this thread when I've done it. I'm currently just doing France, but noting sites mentioned by others.

Hi ValDa,
We are not bothered about private facilities but very interested in superb ones!
As said those at L'Amfora are excellent and staff seemed to be cleaning non stop from early morning till afternoon. One day my wife picked uo a mop after showering and was told that it was not her job!
Those we have stayed at that we recall as having above average faclitiies are;
Camping Christopherous-Kirchberg an der iller-Germany-ACSI
Camping Brunelles-Jard sur Mer-France-Camping Cheque
Chateau Domaine l'Epervierre-Gigny sur Saone-France
Camping Aktiv-Prutz-Austria-ACSI
Camping Coldenhove-Eerbeek-Netherlands-ACSIThe post from KjellNN shows that we must never assume that we all want the same,in terms of 'superb'. My wife dislikes 'Unisex' facilities but for him they are obviously preferable.
A few years ago we were on a site near St Jean de Monts, Bois Masson, which had Unisex facilities and the blocks had pitched roofs with Velux type windows. It was quite disconcerting to realise that at night, due the interior lighting and reflective nature, those windows were turned into 'mirrors' enabling you to see, and be seen, when inside your toilet cubicle!

I am assuming that when people refer to 'private bathrooms' they really mean a private facility which includes a shower/toilet/washbasin ... and maybe other luxuries.
What I would REALLY like, would be a large, deep BATH (as in Bath-tub) with copious really hot water. I realise that this would almost certainly have to be at additional cost.
I have only ever come across a real BATH once, at a campsite in South Africa. (there were about ten on a relatively small site). There was no extra charge, unlimited water, and site fee was minimal by UK standards.
Has anyone come across BATHs in Europe?

Vic, actually, yes; on a CL somewhere in Wales. I know this is in Overseas section, but you did ask in Europe, and AFAIK the UK is in Europe
It's many years ago now and I'm afraid I can't remember the name of the CL, but we were very surprised at the time! If I do remember I'll post back here.

Interesting. Sounds quite a nice site and not unreasonable. In fact we must have driven right past it a few weeks ago. Does amuse me that it says:
Private adult bathroom with bath and shower (available to hire by the day)

Surprised to find a bath... in Wales "of all places"???? Some homes do have them, surprisingly!
WtG, when I said that, I didn't mean in Wales of all places, what I meant was that it was
on a CL in Wales of all places. I couldn't remember exactly where other than it was in Wales and I meant that the last place I'd have expected to find a bath would be on a CL. An all-singing, all-dancing site maybe, but not a CL.A good example of how posts can be written in all innocence, yet be mis-interpreted. I knew exactly what I meant, but can see how it could be read in a different way to how I meant.
Hope that's cleared up now.

Personally I am not bothered about a Private Bath Room but I do like 5 * Facilities. Ones we have visited have all been in Germany and Austria. Onese that stand out are Prumtal Camping, Oberweis, Bitburg, Germany. Trend Camping nr Wolfach in the Black
Forest, Alisehof in the Black Forest some for rent to. nr Wolfach.Walch's Inner Braz in Austria. Seehof, Kramshof. Astria, Austria Camp, Mondsee, Austria, Nattersee, Mutters, Innsbruck, Austria.. all of these are ACSI Camping Card Sites. Strangly we have visited 14 Countries in Europe and all the best we have visited
are in just 2 Countries.0 -
OH has been on the ACSI site and trying to find out about unisex disabled facilities, but the various categories that are selectable do not make it clear exactly how the disabled facility is provided.
Also there does not seem to be any guidance on exactly what is required to be provided in disabled facilites with reference to shower heads.
Are there requirements in all countries to provide disabled facilities I wonder.

KjellNN - on the ACSI website, under extra information, there is a page which gives more information. It doesn't state exactly what is required, but that it meets the requirements set down at a meeting with the Dutch Council for Disabled People. Within the information there is a link to sites with particularly good facilities for disabled people, and it may be worth looking at this list for sites in your chosen areas, and then sending each site an email asking about the facilities.
I've been trawling my memory for sites which have flexible shower fixtures, but when you don't have a mobility problem it isn't something you really take notice of. Perhaps others with reduced mobility will have paid more attention to what's available, and be able to help a bit more.
You might also find the Camping Street View website useful - someone does a 'tour' of a campsire on a bicycle and I'm almost certain that they take a peek inside the sanitary blocks, and perhaps even the disabled facilities.

I was going to add that most of the sites in Millau are set on flat land adjacent to the Rivers Tarn or Dourbie, which I would think is another important requirement if your wife has a mobility problem.
When you've narrowed things down a bit and have an idea of which sites you like the look of then I'm sure someone will be able to give a bit more detail - and an email to the site will almost always give you the information you need.
