With caravan and car we would like to stop in Lake Como, with easy train access to Milan. This would be for 4 nights in September.

We fancied Camping Spiaggia but they have told us they are fully booked.

All help would be most appreciated. Thank you. Alistair.

Suggest Campeggio La Riva S.N.C. at nearby Sorico.

Take the east lakeside road (SS36) via Lecco.

Lecco was a good part of our holiday and I share the following:

Spiaggia has a very steep to impossible (for our outfit) entry ramp so possibly better avoided (if you see it you'll know what we mean)

From Google Maps, Lecco:camping we give the following:

Riviera (stayed for a week BUT had to use our own toilet and shower faciities as theirs were poor although manager, staff and residents were helpful.

Although it is "a bit industrial" there is a good local hotel for meals, a supermarket and a McDonalds for Wi-Fi, air-con and coffee)

http://www.camping-continental.it/ appears on the map but we never saw it.

http://www.rivabellalecco.it/ which we visited to check it (were committed to Riviera as relatives came over) and found it far better although none of the sites in the area we saw are anywhere near CC standards so your own facilities and a mover are recommended as a backup?)

Having said all of that, the area had some highlights and was a great part of our holiday, in particular:

Como (speedboat on the lake), Bellagio (excellent day out, another world) Varenna (quiet, picturesque) Colico (if the weather is good) Mandello Del Lario (Guzzi museum if you like bikes)

We picked up and dropped off relatives at Milan airport but you are probably better to take the train (Lecco?)

Depending on your previous/future travels, we found Garda far better with high quality sites but Como was a good part of our total trip.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your advices. DougS, you went to so much trouble for which I am grateful. JohnDavis...the advice re the route was invaluable.

We have now decided to stop at Lugano and will visit Como and Milan from there.

    happy holidays.

We would like to have visited Lugano and may do so in the future (your views would help!) However we think you are right to base yourselves there as, whilst the places we visited in Como were really worthwhile, the sites (the sights were great!) we saw in the area were not up to the standards we enjoy.
