We are planning a trip to Iceland and the Faroes this summer, taking the Smyril line ferry from Denmark and landing at Seyoisfjorour. We will be in Iceland for two weeks, and the Faroes one week.We hope to see as much as possible during that time.

We are new to caravan club and motorhoming, so any advice from anyone who has done this trip would be much appreciated.

I get the impression that you may well require a number of spare wheels.

Otherwise I hope all goes well and you get some good advice.Happy

    Good Luck

We did the same trip, albeit 16 years ago and with a caravan instead of a motorhome. At that time the ring road around the island wasn't fully surfaced, although I believe that has changed in the meantime, and there was an earthquake in Iceland while we were on our way there which made for an exciting trip, but one that we would hate to have missed and I'd definitely consider doing it again. We didn't have a puncture, either. 15 days is about right to drive once around Iceland. We were amazed how big the Faroes are when we got there. They always appear just as a couple of dots on any map but we covered over 400km during the two and a half days we were there en route to Iceland.

    Also the
    Camping and Caravanning Club
organise an escorted tour to Iceland, so you may be able to pinch a couple of ideas from their itinerary!

There is a report on UKCS from somebody who has been to Iceland last June in a MH >HERE<. Sounds interesting!

Other than that there are several threads about Iceland, although not all as up to date as that one >HERE< .

Good luck with the planning, hope you have a good time!

From experience, care is needed in the interior of the island, it is very remote. It was used to test the moon lander vehicles. The local off road tours don't venture there much after August. It was strongly recommended to us always to take two vehicles in convoy in case one breaks down. Weather can change very quickly too. Just take advice from the locals and follow it.

Most of the roads that lead to the interior of the island are prohibited for anything other than off-road vehicles anyway, so if you have a normal motorhome you will be more or less restricted to using only the outer ring road, but that still leaves enough to see. On a couple of occasions we left our caravan at the campsite and ventured a little inland with our non-4x4 car where permitted, but it suffered badly from stone chip damage and was due for a respray when we got back.

We went (via a plane) a few weeks ago.Fabulous place.Try the riding, brilliant. The roads we saw were good but we didn't go in the interior and most places we visited were near to Reykevick. There is an article in this months MMM about motorhomeing in Iceland
and one on the Swift caravan talk site about a caravan trip to Iceland. That was originaly written for the caravan magazine and has stunning photography.

Certainly some surreal topography there. Like nowhere else I've ever been. Didn't do it with a van though.

Hope you like Gravadlax and pickled herring! But their lamb is very good too.

many thanks to you all for the useful advice. We'll let you know how we got on when we get back.Intrestingly, the Smyril line ferry people based on the Faroes have a number of different magazines which they will send by post or downloadable online,so we've
got an idea of where to go now.

    thanks again,

    Martyban

    Hi Marty

I can only assume that you are now back home from your Iceland trip!  If so, I would appreciate knowing how you got on.  We are thinking of doing this trip next year.  We have gone as far north as north Germany, this year, so know the ropes as far as Belgium,
Holland and Germany are concerned.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
