Portugal advise for campsites and areas to stay
Hello and Happy new year to everyone.
We have just joined The Caravan Club on the first anniversary of buying our first motorhome and this is our first post.....
We at last feel confident enough to holiday abroad so have decided on a trip driving down through Spain from Bilbao to the Northern Portugese coastline including a visit down to Lisbon this coming July/ August for a total of 3 weeks.
Please forgive us if this topic has been covered before, (we have checked through many of the 400 plus pages of previous topics without seeing anything similar) but we would be very grateful to hear of any advice regarding a suitable area/ campsite to stop
over at overnight midway down into Spain and also recommended campsites on the coast in any of the areas previously mentioned in Portugal. Ideally we would like to stay on a site within walking distance to a seaside town and beach or with local public transport
available to explore the area so that we can keep our motorhome parked up on site. We have seen the 3 sites recommended by the club but wonder if any members have any other gems they are willing to share with us newbees??
Thanking everyone in advance.....

Welcome to CT Andrewanddaisy and a Happy New Year to you as well.
I have been to Portugal a few times both with a caravan and a motorhome although not in recent times. I take you it you will be using the return crossing Portsmouth-Bilbao and wish to tour northern Portugal as far down as Lisbon. For a route into Portugal I would go via Burgos and Salamanca and then head towards Aveiro. A stop over in Salamanca at Camping Regio is well worth while and there is a bus from the campsite into Salamanca. For sites in Portugal the better ones are run by the >Orbitur chain< If you want to visit Porto I suggest Camping Madalena from where you can walk to the beach or catch a bus from the campsite gates into Porto. Heading south towards Lisbon, places we have visited and not regreted are Nazaire, Coimbre, and Obidos. Lisbon has a campsite, Lisboa Camping, in parkland on the outskirts. I have not used it but I have read good reports about it but it is expensive compared to many other Portuguese campsites.
From Lisbon, on the way back to Bilbao, if you have time go via Evora, I can recommend a stop off there.
You can read my notes on our visits to Portugal >here<
I'm sure others will be along with more tips.

Hi Andrew and Daisy. Good luck with your great adventure, but only you can decide what you want to see and where you want to visit on the way to Portugal. Leon? Lugo? Santiago di Compostela?
I would start with all the general guide books you can lay your hands on and starting marking the places that interest you on your maps - then join up the dots. That's the route.
Campsites and Motorhome Aires are everywhere and easy to find - but they can wait till later.
