Canada motor home hire
hoping to spend 3-4 days in Calgary mid July and then head off in a motor home. has any one experience of hiring and touring in that area - will have 10 days free. love walking and great scenery so have high hopes of a good trip.

I did a fly drive holiday 5 years ago and they did everything for me from my instructions. From my experience I can recommend them.
If you are in Calgary at the time of The Stampede then don't miss it. It's not cheap but brilliant. They call it The Greatest Show on Earth and having been and seen it over two days I believe them.

We rented from Cruise Canada. If you book early you may be lucky, like us, to get a substantial early booking discount. We rented from their Vancouver branch and dropped off in Halifax, but dropped by in Calgary because of a minor repair which they fixed while we waited by cannibalising another motorhome for the spare part. We found their service very friendly and courteous.
If you intend to start and finish in Calgary the only way is to go west into Banff and Jasper National Parks. They are breathtaking and that will fill the 10 days that you have at hand.
Because of the wild animals, I'd advise against wild camping, but many of the campsites are located and laid out to give one almost the impression that you are camping wild. So long as you are on Crown property it is not illegal to camp wild, but it is difficult to always know whether this is the case or whether the land is private property.

Thank you all for the feedback, will know in March if son is playing so will then get booking. Likely to have missed the best deals. Noted re wild animals! Some concerns on osquitos but guess will need to spray when walking.

Don't worry about the mozzies. It's bears you need to look out for.
Look out for bear jams on the highways. What happens is a tourist sees a bear and stops then everyone else stops to have a look also, hence the term "bear jam"

We hired in Calgary and travelled over to Vancouver using a one way hire with Cruise Canada. We stayed at: Banff; Jasper; Kamloops and Whistler.
Don't be frightened by the size of the motorhomes, my suggestion is rent the biggest you can afford as Canada is Huge! As for scenery and walking oh my lord take 30 days not 10!!
Mail me for more info if you want. We did book all sites in advance but didn;t need to apart from Whistler. This is a must to book well in advance.
Leave time for a visit to the Glacier on the Icefield Parkway between Banff and Jasper.
We also hired an A-Class beast from El-Monte which was a 39ft beast and offered great space for a family of 4!!

The bear advice is true.. especially in the summer when rivers are low. Just be sensible, if you stop for a lovely lakeside drink stay close to the van and just be aware. As for the one we came across outside the Fairmont in Whistler - just have your wits

Belated thank you for the Intel craig. We are poised to firm up plans - fingers crossed our son gets in the Team England squad for roller derby World Cup. Should know by month end and then all systems go. Wish it could be 30 days buts one for retirement
