We are planning to travel to Normandy, Loire Valley  & Brittany regions of France late May 2016.

we would like some advice & recommendations of sites to stay.

we are a couple with no children, animals & tour with our caravan.

we very much like the caravan club standards & have looked on the cc site but unable to decide which site would best suit our needs. We enjoy quiet sites & are looking for such sites with cycling routes & local towns, perhaps within walking distance. We
don' t need entertainment as we enjoy good food, wine & historical sights of interest. We would appreciate any recommendations.

All sites will be quiet in May, so you can be reassured about that. The choice of sites is infinite in its variety and you can tour as you wish without booking at that time of year.

A copy of the ACSI card guide will give you sites at bargain prices, and a copy of the Club's Touring France guide will give you an even bigger choice plus a wealth of helpful information. I do recommend you buy them both and a copy of a more general guidebook of places to visit and sights to see. Make those choices your main priority - there will always be a campsite there. It's better to do things that way round rather than choosing a campsite first and then wondering what there is to do in that area.

Enjoy your planning. I hope it goes well.

Just to reiterate eurotravellers views that all sites will be quiet. There is no need to discount sites with pools/bars/cafe etc as these will aso be very quiet, far quieter than the Club sites you are used to.

we did find that the site we visited, which was included  in the CC guide, was full of Brits so you may wish to avoid (or seek) those

Above all there is no need to book and invariably you would pay less on arrival even on a site that you could book through the CC

Just in case you have doubts and don't believe it here is another vote for ACSI and no booking in May. We always go to France for six weeks in early May through to mid June and never book.

Which route are you planning to cross over on? If using Calais roiute I would book into Black Horse site night before. you dont want to be doing a long jpourney from Cumbria racing to catch a ferry. We also book a site close to ferry port on return and catch
    an early morning ferry.

I hope you are having a long holiday. Normandy, Brittany and Loire valley - an awful lot to see. In the Loire I prefer area around Sancerre ( and the wine is not bad either). This year my plan is Loire, Burgundy and Champagne - my car will come back clinking
    with bottles!

Have a look at No.1 Campsite it's a French website with a very comprehensive list of sites by area. You can find some really excellent municaple sites ( lovelly one at Plougoum )  that can offer great value.

As has already been said, May is quiet and no need to book.  We've gone from about the middle of May until early July for over 10 years now and never book.

Caravan Club standards: that depends exactly what you mean - you won't find any white pegs, or blue or red ones for that matter.  Pitching is more relaxed than here, by which I mean that you can usually pitch whichever way you want, ie nose in, nose out
or sideways.  Pitches are often hedged, giving a degree of privacy.

Toiletblocks vary in size, are normally clean, but in the off peak season be prepared for possible part closure of toiletblocks, due to the fact that there are few people on site.  We've been to sites where males and females have to use the same part of
the toiletblock, but that's not a problem.

Don't book anywhere; choose a few sites you like the sound of; just turn up on the first site.  Have a look round, if you like it, stay, if you don't, move elsewhere.  There are so many sites in France, there will always be another one nearby.  Also, you
won't normally pay on the day of arrival.  It's sufficient to tell them you may stay for 2 or 3 nights, but if you change your mind it's no problem.  You either pay the night before you leave or on the morning of your departure.

As you like cycling, the Loire Valley has lots of cycle routes to choose from; we haven't "done" much of Normandy and Brittanny, but I've read that there are cycle routes there too.

Just one caveat about booking. France host the Euro Football tournament and whilst Normandy and Brittany should be OK as I don't believe any stadia in those areas are hosting matches you may find the Loire sites a bit fuller as, depending where you decide
to go, they may be on transit routes for fans. You mentioned late May so you may be OK but if extending past the first week in June then be prepared. Normally I would agree with other posters and not bother booking. Away from major roads you should find cycling
fun as traffic will be light. We always take bikes and have a great time.

While I agree you can easily find sites in May we did find that the clubs pre booking rates were cheaper than those advertised at the sites. Depends on if this is of use to you.

We have always booked black horse farm for the day before and then got the early ferry. we have decided that in future we will go straight to the ferry then pitch up on the other side to rest up. Black horse has become a bit of a waste of a day for us

If travelling from Portsomouth book onto Rooksbury Park CC the night before they have a very good ferry pitch area meaning an easy get away in the morning and it is only a 15-20 minute drive from the port. In Normanday I would recommend Camping Le Cormoran
we stayed there and it was a brilliant site close to the town of St Mere Eglisse. The site is right across from the beach and the facilities are very good and the pitching areas are very spacious also there is plenty to do in the local area and many typical Norman
villages to visit.  In Brittany I would recommend Camping Domaine Du Logis which is about 25 miles from St Malo again this is a great site with a good outdoor swimming pool and lovely bar area converted from an old barn very peaceful site and again the pitches
are spacious also there is plenty to do in the local area.
