Coast between Portugal and Gibraltar

Safe?  never had or seen any problems alomng that coast.

Suggestions?

La Aldea in El Rocio is a must.  A quality site with a good restaurant set on the edge of the Donana National Park. The town of El Rocio is a pilgrimage town with a beautiful church on the
lakeside. The streets are all sand and the main form of transport is horse.  There is a fiesta virtually every weekend in spring with flamenco parties on Saturday night and processions to the church on Sunday morning.  The National Park is home to the Lynx
and to many unusual birds, Sacred Ibis, spoonbills flamingos, azure magpies etc.  There are off road trips into the park.  Sitauted halfway between the Portuguese border and Seville access is easy and day trips to Seville are easy with less than an hour's
drive each way.

Next stop for us would be Las Dunas at el Puerto de Santa Maria, another pleasant site across the bay from Cadiz.  There is a regular passengerferry service across the
bay, the best way to approach Cadiz. El Puerto is at one corner of the Sherry Triangle and there are Bodegas there to visit, including Osborne, home of the bull silhoutte which is now the symbol of Spain and also Terry's.  A few miles east is Sanlucar, where
Manzanilla sherry is made (La Gitana is a good visit), then the river estuary with boat trips into the other side of the Donana park.  An hour's drive north is Jerez, more well known bodegas here, as well as a riding school which puts on amazing displays even
if you are not a horsey person.

Next stop would be one of the three excellent sites in the Conil de la Frontera area, Roche, Rosaleda and Pinar San Jose.  Having stayed at all three our favourite would be  Pinar.  Conil
is a fascinating white town, and here are a number of other white towns and villages in the area.  The sea here rolls into long sandy beaches interspersed with cliffs.  In January it is pretty much deserted. Pinar is close to Cape Trafalgar.

Between here and Gibraltar the only place we have stayed is Tarifa.  Here the sites and beaches are pretty good, but the wind can be terrible.  We felt as if we were in a sandblaster and feared for the paintwork on the car and van.  If you are into windsurfing
though it is the windsurfing capital of Europe.

If you want to visit Gibraltar you could do it in a day trip from Conil or from one of the sites beyond.  The Rock is a must see, but for me the town itself was a bit shabby and scruffy.  No need to spend time there unless you want British shops and duty
free fags/booze.

I would endorse much of what oldagetraveller has said above except we don't like camping Las Dunas.  It is the location we are not keen on compared to the other sites mentioned.  OK, its fine if you want to spend a couple of days visiting Cadiz but perhaps
not for a longer stay.  Similarly, La Aldea is quite a nice site next to a unique settlement.  I wouldn't recommend a stay longer than a week or so.  The town is worth seeing, particularly on weekends when visitors arrive from all over Spain for the celebrations
in the Church there but access into the Park is very limited and as it is a protected area there is not a lot to do without travelling a good distance from the site.

A word of caution about the site at Pinar.    In January it will almost certainly be full.  It only opened in 2011 and it has become extremely popular as a winter long term site for many German and Scandinavian holidaymakers who tend to stay from November
to March.  You will need to check in advance if you want to stay there.  It is a lovely site if you get a sunny pitch but even if there is availability in January it is likely that all the sunny pitches (the site is planted with pine trees that provide shade)
have been taken.  There is a lovely walk from there to the lighthouse at Trafalgar.

We did what you are planning last year. From The Algarve we went to stay at Conil, about 1.5 hours drive from Gibralter Found Conil to be okay but it was very windy when we were there at the end of February

I want to spend the winter away from Scotland, sole lady with 2 well behaved dogs, Somewhere warm and sunny so, where would anyone recommend in either Spain or Portugal that is safe.  I realise that I would need to be on a site but this is my first motorhome
and first trip to Europe.
