Rothenburg - end of June
hello there,
We're taking our first European trip in the summer and we're planning a stop at Rothenburg for a night or two. We're looking at staying at the parking 2 or parking 3 stellplatz for €10 a night. Has anyone stayed in either one before? I'm slightly concerned
that we get there and there's no spaces left! We're new to that type of camping (we usually use sites) so have really no idea what to expect.

Haven't stayed at either of those stellplatze, but have stayed on 4 stellplatze along the Moselle at the end of May/beginning of June. That is also a very popular area of Germany. At that time there was plenty of space, even at 6pm, and none of them were ever anywhere near full.
However, you don't say exactly when in summer you are travelling. It is my guess that, if you are going July/August, it would be busier than in May/June, so I'd advise getting there earlier rather than later, ie about 3-4pm. I must admit to not having been there either in July or August, so it is an educated guess. But with MHs getting ever more popular, I don't think I'm far off the mark, and would apply the same if it was me going at that time.
If you are going May/June though, you should have no problem.

I have stayed on one of the stellplatz in June, easy walk into the town.I didn't know there were two but we had no problem parking and as I recall it was a large area which even had blue badge spots. As you cannot book stellplatz places you will just have
to take pot luck whatever time of year you choose to turn up.peedee

Stayed in june 2010. No problems although Stelplatz was muddy. Lovely interesting town. If you are travelling extensively in Germany consider buying Bord Atlas

Thank you everyone! We'll be there in the last week of June (I put 'end of June' in the title as a clue . We've looked into the campsites but at nearly three times the price of the stelplatz, they are a slightly less attractive option. We would likely
be arriving mid afternoon so it is good to know that it is likely we won't have a problem getting a spaceThanks again

They are large car parks....
Sounds fun.

We're only staying for a night, maybe two, eurortraveller. We're going away for 5 weeks, if we were paying €30 a night every night, that's a lot of cash!

Yu don't need to pay 30 euros a night every night.
Check out the ACSI Camping Card (discount) scheme. The sites at Detwang aren't part of the scheme but there will almost certainly be sites in the scheme in other places you wish to visit.
As regards Rohtennburg stellplatz - we stayed at Parkplatz2 twice for overnight stays. The last was in 2014. On both occasions there were no problems finding a place. There was a specific area just for motorhomes but also a huge area where motorhomes
could also stay. It is extremely close to the town walls with very easy pedestrian accesss into town. Even for those folks who don't like to stay on aires/stellplatz it is a superb place to park during the day for visiting the town. We found that it was perfetly
fine for an overnight stay.I would be surprised if you couldn't find space in the large area but if you couldn't stay there you could drive to Detwang to see if there was room on one of the campsites.

One area is a specific area for motorhomes. It all depends what you want or expect for an overnight stay but if you hven't seen the particular spellplatz you won't know what it's like.

Why is it that when I want to quote something it doesn't show in the reply-box? Grrrrrr! And then it appears 5 times (I did keep clicking on it to see if it would appear eventually, but it didn't).
Back to the quoted text - WH, I stand corrected, just shows that I didn't read everything, although I did read through your post twice to seewhen you were going! At that time there should be no problem.

After I read my reply back, I realised how cheeky it sounded but by then it was too late to edit
That is the Rothenburg we plan to visit, I had no idea there were others! Someone we know told us off for planning to go to touristy places - but we are tourists! I want to see stuff I recognise

If you're planning a holiday in that part of Germany I recommend you also visit the Weiskirche near Steingaden in the Schongau district and nearby Oberamagau too. I'm not sure if there are Stellplatz nearby but there are ample parking areas at both locations.
The Stellplatz on the banks of the Rhein at Koln is excellent too and you can reserve pitches via their website.

That is quite a distance from Rothenburg ob der Tauber, not far short of 200 miles. But I agree that it is beautiful, we've only been once, a long time ago, but have lovely memories of it. The Passion Plays are held there every
10 years, and in 2010 friends of ours went there to watch it, they were very impressed with it all; next time will be 2020.0 -
Have been to Rothenburg ob der Tauber many time over the years staying at Hotel Griffen twice and with the caravan nearyby.
Have stopped once at Tauber Idyll at Wetwang once which was excellent and within walking distance of the town.
Rothenburg was restored to its original state after the war from damage caused by 16 Allied Bombers bombed it in March 1945 killing 37 people, destroying 306 Houses, 6 Public Buildings, 9 Watchtowers and 2000 ft of the Outer Town Wall.
