Imst West campsite just south of the Fern Pass is an ideal last stop over on the way to the Benner and Garda. It's also ACSI registered and there's an excellent traditional Austrian restaurant a short walk away. Alternatively there are two sites in Lermoos
(just north of the Fern Pass) but our preference is Imst West.

Another option might be Natterersee which is close the the Brenner. See report here

I have also used natterErsee on similar journey, very good site and handy for a trip into Innsbruck.

We have been to Garda many times. I am a windsurfer so the north of the lake for me. Garda is a lovely place to stay and there are many really lovely sites there. We have not been there for the last 3 years but used to go every year in our Westy. So many
places to see, to eat and to do. You will love it! Oh and take the bikes. For us more mature types there are many safe bike only routes to 'inland' villages and also in some areas around the east side of the lake. If you love mountain biking you will be spoilt
    for choice! Enjoy!!

Hi Walter, Following advice and research on CT we travelled via the Fern and Reisa/Reschen Pass from Germany to Lake Garda in May/June this year. We were two couples in a car/caravan  and motor home. We chose this as the motorhome is over 3500kg and they
did not want to use a GoBox.

One plus point of this route, rather than using the Brenner,is that so long as you avoid the Landeck Tunnel the route is toll free and we not only found it an easy route but also very enjoyable and stayed at Camping Aktiv in Prutz for four days rather than
    the intended one.

The route was busy on the way out, the end of German school holidays, but was no worse than most roads around the lakes and whilst busy it was,for us, better than being on the Brenner Pass motorway routes where you cannot overtake for long stretches If towing.

We really enjoyed this route, and the stop in Prutz, and this will be our default route if heading for Garda,or South/West of that,in future.

    "Newcastle" to Ijmuiden, (great ferry)

Laacher See, Detwang (for Rothenburg) Fussen, Natterersee, we found  excellent and Torbole (top of Garda) same plus Sirmione (bottom of Garda) recommended by us.

Followed by  Venice, Verona, Como area, Interlaken etc...?

If you don't have to hurry, then DON'T.
