Tolls in Portugal
Hello, we are off to Portugal and Spain in January. I am concerned about paying for tolls in Potugal. I have looked on the CTT toll website, but I cant see if the prepaid toll card can be used on ALL motorways. Also, if you have activated it, do you just
drive through the toll without stopping?
Any information would be gratefully received.
Thanks
Marilyn

When you join the motorway system at a major junction , you will see a lane for 'foreign' vehicles. Draw in and stop and your numberplate will be read by a camera. You then enter deatails of the bank card you wish to be debited . You'll then get a printout
ofyour details. Not all motorways are electronic tolls: on these you take a ticket and pay on exit.0 -

Once registered, your 'membership' is good for all and only electronicaly-tolled motorways i.e those with overhead gantries at regular intervals and no toll booths. On other routes you have to take a ticket and pay on exit.
Finding a regisrtration point may be a problem. On the A22, for example, the registration is at the border just over the Guadiano bridge.

Thank you all for the information. I know that the overall toll for us will be just over 60 Euros and I had thought of buying the prepaid tolls for the whole amount, from your replies, I now know that this will not work as some must be paid in cash.
Will need to have a re-think.
We are hoping to travel from Santander to Santiago de Compostela, then into Porugal. Then take the toll roads to Porto, then Lisbon, then Albufeira, then eventually into Seville in Spain. Perhaps I might have to use a credit card instead of pre paid tolls.
Thank you all so much.

We did this route in reverse in Sept / Oct just gone.
On way into Portugal coming from Saville, as said already there is a pull over for foreign cars where you register with credit card (valid for 30 days). All Algarve tolls are electronic so they rattle up as you drive. We stayed near to Lagos for 12 days with a little running round. We then went Lisbon - Coimbra - Porto - Santiago again with some running round incurring the odd extra toll. Electronic toll areas were Algarve and the north of Portugal, all others inbetween were peajes. And the cost:- Peajes, £57, Electronic Tolls £20.04 - It took more than 5 weeks for the Electronic Tolls to show on our credit card statement.
Hope this has helped.

Marilyn,
Here is a story I wrote for the Club stories section of the forum which describes, with photos, the
toll system when we visited in May 2014. It may offer some help. Regards, Roy0 -
Thanks again to everyone, your replies have been most helpful. Just one last question, when the bill came through onto your credit card, was the card charged individually for each toll, ie with lots of foreign currency charges, or did it accumulate into
one single charge. Thanks.Marilyn

On the statement I had 6 individual transactions adding up to £20 ish. As we use the Halifax Clarity card there were no charges at all.
Write your comments here...Thanks, must sort out a different card as all of ours charge and I suspect the charges would be more than the tolls. Thanks again. Marilyn

Write your comments here...There have been a number of threads relating to the best card to use and the Halifax Clarity comes out right up there. We have been round Europe on 3 six week trips and the card has never cost more than about £4 for a whole trip.
