I had an eTrex years ago, when I first started gliding. In those days, GPS units were quite rare (and very expensive) and this was a quite basic system.
As I recall, the background map was very basic and you could buy more detailed maps to install (from Memory Maps, for example). The unit had very limited memory though, so you had to pick the bit of the country that you wanted to install. A bit of a fiddle when travelling to different areas. The latest versions may well have improved on this.
There are many types of GPS system available now, including phone apps, wrist watches etc. Also there are things like Fit Bits that measure distance walked, but based on the number of steps taken, so not as accurate. I think the latest versions may be GPS based, though.
I think I stll have the old eTrex somewhere.......

Ian, where did you fly?
I remember a young pilot from our club demonstrating an early GPS for 'Tommorows World' it was impressive technology for the time. As I spent half my time on cross country flights wondering where I was, it would have been a bonus for me.

Husky, as Baker has said there are loads of options, free aps on the mobile - STRAVA for example to use with your phone (more tracking data than you can throw a stick at and puts it all up on google maps for you) and if you dont want a phone based device,
there are loads of smart watches about for not much more money have a look at the ones by Garmin.0 -
If you want it to work out how far you walk, it's accuracy will depend on where you are walking. Lots of trees confuses where it reckons you are and can lead to gross overestimation. On forest walks the OH's fit bit, which counts steps, works out a lot
more accurate. Although we did spend a fair bit of time calibrating it against the GPS in open terrain.0 -
With the Etrex 10 you could take up Geocaching.
