Kindle Fire HD OS 5 Memory Full Message

I’m hoping there are some clever people on CT who can help me solve the above issue.  A long winded question, but I have tried to cover all points.  I’m pretty green about the storage on this device, I understand a filing cabinet

I keep getting a message to say that my internal memory 5GB is full or almost full.  I have faffed about for several days to try to reduce this by using a 32 GB SD card.  So far the success rate is very low.  I have requested that all Apps, Movies & TV shows,
Music, Photos and personal videos, Audio books, Books and Periodicals are on SD card.  I have no music movies or TV shows or games.  My Apps are BBC radio IPlayer, BBC News, Facebook, Facebook and Messenger and all except BBC Radio IPlayer are SD compatible. 
I have succeeded in downloading all my Audible Books to my SD card and some of my books (I understand that actual books use little memory as they are usually kept in your library and downloaded to read).  I have been unable to transfer photos and videos from
the Kindle memory – only a few actual photos taken on the Kindle, mainly downloads from Messenger from my daughter of our granddaughters, similarly with videos.

My internal storage shows 563MB of 5.63 GB free breakdown as follows:-

Misc 2.04GB Apps & Games 1.85 GB, Personal Videos 656 MB 17 items, System 528 MB, Photos 29.92 MB 102 items, Amazon Movies & TV 1.25 MB for 1 item (?system?) Doc’s 371 5 items (Welcome to OS 5 92.07 KB twice, Introducing On Deck and other new tablet features
76.54 KB twice, one doc of mine 35.7KB)

VIEW CONTENT, brings up message ‘You do not have any content that qualifies for 1-Tap Archive. Please tap the back button and use the storage settings page to remove content from your device.’

ARCHIVE NOW says ‘not available for achieving.  Please delete contents individually’

I am so confused.  I do not want to lose photos and videos of our granddaughters, or the photos taken but could live with losing the latter.

This situation only appears to have arisen since an upgrade which includes an icon for Alexa – is this coincidental??

    Are you able to connect it to a proper computer via a USB lead?

    David it appears I can Smile.  How does that help?  Sorry to be so dim - not my area of expertise at all.

    Transfer the photos and other essential items to files on your PC. Once you are sure that they are there, intact and viewable - delete from your tablet to clear it's memory for further storage.

    Thanks, too late tonight to start the process.  I'll try tomorrow when I should have more patience

    I tend to download my photos on separate memory sticks.  If you get a trojan or other nasties on your computer you could lose your photos and other things.  By all means, keep your photos on your computer hardrive, but use memory sticks as back-up just in

    Well I've moved photos over and Deleted User lots of them from my Kindle, now have 1.58 GB out of 5.63 GB. So have some space . Still slow loading but I can live with that.  I do backup onto an external hard drive.

    I am not sure how the Kindle Fire differs from the original Kindle. What I set up for Margaret (original Kindle) was a separate folder for her read books. Every so often she connects the Kindle to her laptop and moves read books to that folder so she only
    has unread books visible. Obviously does not save space but just keeps things tidy.
