Oh hadn't realised no military there now, but I should have engaged brain!! Friends parents retired out there 20 ish years ago but returned to UK 5 ish years ago, probably got the timing right! Have they committed themselves for a long time? Postage
is a real eye opener too . I also switch my searches to an NZ base and order as a local, don't know if that will help with Malta. Sometimes need to have NZ bank card but not always. Then I tell daughter to order and I pay into her UK bank, she can save it
or withdraw out there from ATM.They haven't commited to any length of time, however if they return within 12 mths they will have to refund the company he works for as they paid for the flights, and moving their personel belongs (still haven't got them yet)
Son is enjoying the work very much, its just things like the kids have to go to the school nearest to them and have to have the uniform, which can only be bought from a certain shop. That and all the books they require for school, they didn't get much change
from 1000€. Food is way more expensive and not much in the way of supermarkets like they are used to. Owning a car in Malta is very very expensive, hiring longterm is probably going to be his best bet but again not cheap, parking is a nightmare and this is
the off season. At the moment he is going to work by local bus, it takes an hour to go a short distance as they stop at every bus stop. It would take an hour to walk, cycling is out of the question far to dangerous. If he had a car he could do the journey
in 20 mins. He doesn't want to commit to anything just yet as they are still feeling there way. The likes of books for the kids are again very expensive, think 4 times as much, Lego which they love is also 4 times the price. Even things like sweets and chocolate
are expensive. I'm sure in time they will just learn to except it all but while everything is new its been a bit of a shock, that and of course the exchange rate hasn't been in their favour, as until recently they were living off their UK account. Now he is
paid locally its not so bad.We did try to explain all this to them before they went but they were so caught up in the adventure. So now we just keep nodding and agreeing with them, making soothing sounds. Kids who'd have em!
Plus side is they are having the adventure they wanted, mixing with lots of people from differant cultures and countries, loving the weather and the fact that they live just a 10 minute walk from the Med, so swimming most weekends.

Well didn't get a walk, even to the shop as it turned grey and wet. We do need the rain local reservoir low.
Set to and sorted the alcove cupboards in the dining room. Not before time. Dump run required mainly VHS videos, just keeping ones of our son playing football. Kindly recorded by another parent, need to get them put onto disc. Went on to do the bookshelves
above, lots of them for the charity shop. Pulled all my family history research together, might get it properly sorted now its not part of my day job!! At present it's copies and entries .Sorted lots of paperwork. Surprised to find personally signed thank you's from managers, following when we had restructuring, for absorbing and keeping the wheels turning. Sometimes we got a monetarily reward too. In the last ten years we had few pay rises
and no written thank you's .Plenty of shredding to do. I looked at the shredder and it rebelled . Spent ages sorting did one sheet at a time with five or six sheets when it decided to conk out again! Wish we had an open fire or could have bonfires.
There's much in 'the rolling stone gathers no moss'. We moved often but been in this house 32 years.
Listened to a very moving programme in radio 4 'Voices of the First World War' today's was cowardice. Several available on iPlayer. Afternoon drama was a favourite too The Clerks Room, a spin off of the TV series Silk.
I closed the curtains at 3.45pm as it was so uck I needed to shut it out!

Been a rather damp and grey day, and raining on way home from work OH had day off so, collected new doors for our kitchen , the carpenter
is fitting them at the end if the week. OH could do it but he is still suffering with his tennis elbow . Got home and he has roasted a chicken and all the trimmings for tea.Tammygirl read with interest about living in Malta. Hope things sort themselves out for your family out there.

We're at a site near Buxton at the moment and we're almost certain that the owner of the motorhome on the pitch next to us is Brian Capron (he played serial kilker Richard Hillman in Corrie about 12 years ago - he married Gail and almost killed them by dumping
his car in the canal). We haven't seen much of him to enable a conversation to find out for sure, but we did find out that he just happens to be appearing at the Buxton Opera House in a play last night and tonight, so we are fairly sure!David

Tammygirl I'm sure it will all work out. As you probably know well it takes a while to go native! Our daughter did much better once she dealt in dollars in her mind and everyday. Sounds very like NZ price wise, stuff has to be imported, best food stuff gets
exported in NZ for the economy so whilst as a country they can grow their food possibly better than Malta it ain't cheap. Books are incredibly expensive, just check out on book jackets. I like to use proper book stores preferably self owned, but have had to
go with book depository so granddaughters get selection of books, so important to start them young . Decent weather and close to a beach makes up for a lot0 -

Like the sound of your tea don't know what we are having yet.
I'm sure they will settle soon, once they have all their belongings to make it more of a home I think DIL will be happy. She has now made friends with another Brit who is new out there so that's good. Next stop for her will then be to find work, she hates
being idle.I hate dark dull days and rain, today has been quite mild and dry so no complaints from me today.
