Incidentally, once you get to your State Pension age, you will not have to pay NI any longer.

Write your comments here...It's my 65th birthday on 18th August, KjellNN, so I suppose I'll need to apply for my state pension on that date or can it be done earlier? I wonder whether it is paid weekly or monthly. If monthly, I presume I'll receive the first payment on 18th September, is that right? Perhaps they allow you to choose whether weekly or monthly? Do I need to apply to stop NI contributions?

Getting very close now! I think your afternoon in the relaxer needs to be spent speaking to pensions people. Have you not received any communication from them or checked out the government pension webpages??  Best be on the case asap.  They may well check
out your current situation, NI contributions etc as that is what you're pension is based on. I know someone who is 65 about a month after you and knows how much and when payable already.  Be pro active on this ocassion ?

    You will indeed.....

Write your comments here...Can parking fines be offset against tax? I've had two work related parking charge notices for collecting orders from Macdonalds that have cost me a total of £123.

    No.

State pension is now usually paid every 4 weeks (so 13 equal payments a year - not calendar months). When you start getting your pension you will get a new tax code, which should be passed on to any other employers, personal pension providors etc.

You do not have to claim your pension as soon as you are eligible - you can delay it, and then you do start to claim it is more.

But don't take my word for all of this!

Write your comments here...Thanks, Bakers2. I've just been on the phone to the state pensions department and it was all completed over the phone. They took my bank details as it will be paid directly through the bank. The first payment will be three weeks
after my 65th birthday and every four weeks thereafter.

Correct, Goldie, although you can chose to be paid weekly but they don't 'advertise' the fact.

Malcolm should have received a letter with a pension forecast and asking him whether he wanted to start receiving it.

You need to ring them - you won't just automatically get it. If you don't tell them you want to be paid, they assume that you want to defer it.

They will look at your NI record in order to assess how much you get.

They will usually transfer you to the Pension Credit department who will then check whether you qualify for pension credit. They will ask about your employment history if they have no record of tax and NI payments for recent years. Hope you have some good answers ready! Wink

Malcolm you are generally given very good and accurate advice on here, you've just seen what happens when you act on it .  IanH gives good advice because of his CAB work check out his post above.  Hopefully you'll now know much and when you have money
coming in and you can start to live and enjoy life and if you need additional income find something that pays the living wage and doesn't wear out your car.

Only if you are an employee, you would then need to request an exemption certificate to give to your employer.

If you are self employed you pay Class 2 contributions up till you are 65, then HMRC will know that you are exempt.

Write your comments here...They didn't offer me the weekly option. There was no mention of that!

They did offer pension credit though but said it was means tested. I explained to them that my income from self -employment was variable. I will know by the end of the tax year how much I earned. They said they would send me the form with notes explaining it.

They understood that the tax and national insurance position will become clearer by the end of the tax year when the tax return is submitted.

I never received any letter about it but I did get a pension forecast online.

Write your comments here...I'm registered as self-employed so it seems not. I'll be required to submit a tax return on 31st January and presumably they will notify me how much to pay in class 2 NI contributions up to 18th August 2016.

Incidentally, there is a formal signed contract with dinnertogo stating the terms on which I provide fast food delivery service and the contract does make it clear that I'm self-employed and responsible for my own tax and national insurance.

Write your comments here...Dinnertogo may be new to the Worthing area but they were already established in the Brighton and  Hove area for ten years! During those ten years they have been using drivers on a similar contract to mine, so they would already
be known and approved by HMRC.

    There's an interesting article
    here
about the national minimum wage / living wage.

You will see that freelance workers are amongst those covered by the national living wage.

It also describes how 'piece work' workers should have their rates per item (delivery?) calculated, to ensure that they can achieve the minimum wage. In simple terms, the rate per item (delivery?) should be set at such a rate that an 'average' speed worker
can achieve 1.2 times the national living wage (this allows slower than average workers to have a chance of achieving te national living wage).

    Interesting.

It was said tongue in cheek Brue, and in no way would I 'egg him on' I even considered I might get a rap over the knuckles from a champion for posting it. While there is a forum that gives stars to posters then this sort of thing will happen. As I have said

It wasn't an indiviual criticism, but people who keep probing and challenging for more informtion will get it as it just fuels the fire.Sad As it says in the guidelines "do not feed the trolls"

Incidentally I don't think trolling is stopped by not having stars.
