How does the idea of a gaggle of HGV's grab you? All very well trundling down the motorway with a lead driver. What happens when they come off the motorway which they have to do at some stage?

    I read this news and was horrified. Oneputt, it seems that the DfT are considering trailing a scheme whereby driverless lorries will trundle down  a part of the M6 in Cumbria and be led by just one lorry that has a driver. No further details were forthcoming but I did check the date to make sure I hadn't missed March

    Whatever next?

    I thought there was already a similar scheme to this which didn't meet requirements, its called the railway!

    I seem to recall reading that each vehicle will have its own driver in the cab so that when it needs to de-train it is under manual control and can safely continue on its own separate journey. Whilst 'connected up' there is only one active driver, in the
    front lorry, controlling speed and direction for them all.

    what will be the distance between them will you be able to pull in the gap what happens at a jucntion will you know it a convoy  if there are ten of them you may have to go to the next junction  if you are over taking and can not get in . ten forty footers
    in a row four hundred feet plus the gaps thats some train length

    The mind boggles at the utter stupidity of what this Govt will waste money on. I notice that it is the North where this crazy scheme is going to be tested. M25 not available then? Undecided

    Just what is the benefit? Effectively one driver in charge of all that weight, what happens if he uses his mobile, laptop,or light a ciggie?

    as a HGV driver i can never see this taking off i can remember when a few companys wanted to try a use road trains two artic trailers at once our roads just cant cope .it would be funny when motorway closed and a tight diversion put on

    I am HGV driver it will be alright till they see a Tesco truck in front Bassett.

    That was my first thought ...... trying to get back into lane one to leave could be fun when towing yourself

    if there are 10 of these trucks in convoy and the first (with driver) pulls out to overtake do the other 9 automatically pull out at the same time without regard to whats coming up behind themSurprised

    it will never work in this country, its just not big enough to cope with the convoy system. Motorways my be fine but off them........ traffic lights, roundabouts, villages and not forgetting the deliveries....i suppose once they leave the motorway each truckdriver take's control and go on his merry little way. Apart from them drafting each other to see if it saves fuel..........what the hell is the differance.....apart from costing US millions on trials.....Grrrr

    This happened only yesterday on the M6 at J36.  From there northwards, the motorway was closed.  Luckily, we only had the car, not towing, so set the sat nav to using "no motorways", and had a gorgeous ride in the hills to Morecambe

    A lorry driver friend told me the other day these convoys would be using the outside lane once up and running, don't know how true that is but will be very interesting if it is. Sounds too stupid to believe but knowing the powers that be I can believe it
