Just checked, in this country its 97.9p per litre or in Euros its 1.44.  In France/Belgium its 76p per litre/Euros 1.00.  We, in fact, are the most expensive by farYell

In euros 97.9 pence is 1.28 euros.  Still expensive by European costings, but not quite as bad as 1.44!  It's still 101.9 around here for non-supermarket fuel.

We paid .977 a litre yesterday at Tesco here in MK. I am still surprised that diesel is cheaper than petrol!

You can't really compare different countries as they all have different tax rates. In some countries the fuel is cheaper because they toll their motorways.

David, I am surprised that you are surprised that Diesel is cheaper than Petrol.  It always used to be!  It is cheaper to refine and that was always reflected in its price, until the time some years ago that the Govt raised its duty to equal that of petrol.
Then the greedy fuel companies increased their mark up on diesel in order to keep their petrol price down.

Today greater knowledge by the general public makes that more difficult so both fuels  are treated equally by the supplier.

Diesel is still far too expensive in this country when compared with the rest of Europe.

YellWhat makes me mad is that the price is not reflected in public transport.  They're quick to raise them when fuel goes up, but I don't see them
dropping.  Buses in Manchester are still the same for the last 18 months

Yes but we don't have to pay for our motorways, even if they do have potholes in them

Which really means it's a case of "swings & roundabouts" Happy

I was meaning in the context of recent prices where diesel has only recently fallen below the price of petrol. Whilst the duty is the same for both the wholesale price price of diesel is about 4p a litre more than petrol up until quite recently and that
was generally the margin of difference in forecourt prices. Whilst diesel might be cheaper to produce I don't think they get as much out of a barrel of oil as they do petrol. Also the growth in diesel cars in the past twenty years across Europe lead to a shortage
of refining capacity which would have affected the price. All countries have their own view of tax on fuel and I am not sure it makes sense to compare. Any reduction in fuel duty could only be compensated for by either raising other taxes or putting tolls
on motorways. Do we want that?

No but Diesel should match the rest of Europe and be considerably cheaper than Petrol.  It always was, and that is how it should be. 90% of road transport and commercially used vehicles are Diesel driven. That is the way to keep transport costs down.

What we need is some form of control to ensure the benefits of lower fuel prices are passed to the consumer. If we use car fuel prices as a comparison we have seen about a third reduction in cost. Therefore we should see a significant drop in delivery costs
in our pockets not the retailers.

Diesel prices in the uk have been traditionally higher than the rest of Europe because in Europe the tax on diesel has tradionally been much lower than petrol.  This has not been the case in the uk.  The excuse being concern for the added pollution due to
diesel, may be that was correct all the time?

If you remember when fuel was £1.50 a litre you couldn't switch on the Tv Without seeing Quentin Wilson, remember him?   Going on for the need to stabilise fuel prices by reducing duty.  I am surprised that he isnt campaigning for a duty increase in order
to stabilise the price in the light of falling oil prices.
