Got ours from Ikea about 4 weeks ago and seem to be great.  I did notice that Southampton had mugs when I went in for bowls but they did not have these mugs when I got the plates in Warrington.

Certainly keep this in mind Valda. Since we changed to Corelle we have been more than pleased- no more bleaching tea stains from the melamine cups etc! A much better option IMHO.

We bought 4 plates, side plates and bowls yesterday, £6, perfect :) our current melamine stuff is a weird size and wont fit in a microwave.

    A great find :)

There were some other designs we found on the way out, still white, but with fluted edges and £1.50 a piece ... but we were on our way out and so didn't investigate further.

Re Melemine plates etc, all the packs I have seen say not to use them in a microwave. Hence why we use Corelle. I have only once been to Ikea; an interesting experience - if you have several hours spare! The MK store layout takes a lot of walking through.

After reading this thread went to local IKEA for a look, we got 4 plates, side plates and dishes. No mugs or cups in the range so got 4 porcelain ones. 3 trips in motor home so far not a chip or scratch, much nicer to use than Melamine have to thank ValDa
    for a fantastic tip.

I purchased a set of Aropal from a company in Poland: Dajar, they are on ebay and the packing was excellent and service great. for 6 side plates, 6 dinner and 6 bowls paid £15 plus £10 delviery P&P. Have to say I was very impressed. The Ikea souds good though.

We have always used Melamine, but I dislike it. However OH not happy about the extra weight. Do you folk keep plates in overhead lockers? If not where do you put them in transit? Our brand new van has far more overhead lockers than floor ones, and I use
those for bottles and cooking pans.

I think the plain white is OFTAST  but there are a couple of other patterned ones which I can't see on line. The bowls and side plates, and the patterned range are
recent additions, because I overheard someone else asking about them.

    Each piece is just 50p!!!!

I have never been to IKEA - not had a desire to and our nearest one is 25 or so miles away.  I like independant stores when I can.  However after reading this thread I thought I'd check it out online and consider getting some as I hate melamine and we carry
2 china plates for hot meals and china mugs (touch wood no breakages in 10 years, carried in an overhead locker plate rack and a mug rack). But when I hit the link I got the message

    Have they stopped doing it???

May I suggest you make the effort to visit a IKEA store as they are quite fascination and unlike most other stores in the UK. Most of the stuff is pretty good value and some really good value. They all have very good value restaurants so if you buy nothing
you won't be that much out of pocket. You may decide its not to our taste but its worth a look.

Might take a peek at some point, to check this out.  Heard they have a one way system round the shop - put me off straight away.  I can't bear the thought of not being able to double back or compare/change my mind.  Not much of a shopper at the best of times
    - not my idea of a pastime or hobby - happy to potter about in towns etc when out and about exploring - but exploring an out of town retail park no chance

Off to ikea next week so going to look for some of these - do the patterned ones say they are toughened glass on them? Dont want to get normal ones by accident but prefer pretty to plain white

It's about 25 miles to our nearest IKEA too, so we don't tend to get there very often, however, we have been really pleased with the stuff we have bought from them.  I'm not a fan of the store, generally. You can get around it, to a degree, but it is designed
    as a one way system - that's what I don't really like.

BMB, I think the 'toughened glass/ Corelle type' are only in white, from what I can see.

Whilst there is a 'one-way' walkway, there is no problem with doubling back on yourself, revisiting a particular area, or going through some of the cut-throughs to miss out large amounts of the store that you don't want to visit.  Just have a look at the
store map on the way in, check out where you want to be (Marketplace for Corelle type crockery) and head straight there.

I just wish the one way system would be introduced into all supermarkets, it would make shopping so much easierWink

If you are not interested in the furniture just head up to the top floor where the Market Place is, usually next door to the Cafe.Be interested to know what you make of it.

Thanks - looking at the description the dinner plates are quite small as well at 25cm - will have a look anyway

Ikea do 2 different styles of tempered glass crockery

Basic OFTAST (50p an item) that doesn't have matching cups / mugs

A more "stylish" SANNING range where each piece has its own design (dimples or pattern) - but still basically white and there is a mug in the range.

However, the latter range is more expensive (not hard when the basic range is 50 pence an item!) and slightly heavier (possibly due to plates being larger or slightly thicker in general?)

Even the "expensive" range is probably a quarter of the price of "Correlle" (even special offers / show prices)

    SANNING prices:

    27 cm dinner plate £1.75

    19 cm side plate £1.50

    15 cm bowl £1.25

    24 cm deep plate £1.90

    25 cl Mug £0.95

The SANNING range, like OFTAST, is tempered glass and is difficult to mistake for 'normal' crockery as it has a more glass-like surface texture - more like Pyrex than pottery.  SANNING does offer patterned plates but I think the mugs are all plain.

the mugs are plain white (no colored patterns like the bowls and side plates) but they have fluted / dimples on outside like dinner plates

I bought the oftast plates and a couple of bowls - at 50p it would have been silly not to.  There were small side plates with a blue pattern and also some really nice big mugs with a red pattern in the same material but no patterned big plates that I could

Be aware! We bought some cups because I didn't like the way our melamine stained but discovered the Ikea cups still stain. However that wasn't the problem. On pouring just boiled water into a cup, the whole thing exploded into shards. Splints of glass and
    boiling water everywhere!

We have gone back to our twenty year old melamine cups.
