IKEA toughened glass 'crockery'
Ikea are selling some lightweight toughened glass crockery, Corelle style, for less than £1 per item. There are two or three types - one plain white. Worth checking out if you're looking to replace heavier weight crockery, or as a replacement for melamine.

Ikea has been selling this range of table ware for a while now Valda, started with the dinner plates first but have now introduced the bowls and teaplates but have only seen them in plain white

Do you know what the name of the range is - had a look online but can't see it - maybe in stores only?

I think the plain white is OFTAST but there are a couple of other patterned ones which I can't see on line. The bowls and side plates, and the patterned range are recent additions, because I overheard someone else asking about them.
Each piece is just 50p!!!!

I have some of this and very impressed! I dropped a box containing some of the bowls (along with glasses) out of the boot of the car and while everything else broke, the OFTAST bowls were perfectly fine! Makes you wonder ow Correlle can justify such high

Many thanks ValDa - was going out to get some Corelle to replace 2 year old melamine this afternoon but having seen your post yesterday nipped off to Ikea at Coventry last night and bought a set of Oftast - you have saved us quite a bit and we are very pleased

ValDa, do you know if this product is as versatile as Corelle, ie, can it be used in ovens m'waves etc? Couldn't find much info on the IKEA site...

I don't know, but tempered glass is meant to be oven-proof at normal cooking temperatures. I can't see there would be a problem in a microwave. Even Pyrex sold in some countries is now temperated glass rather than the original borosilicate glass.
Perhaps a phone call to Ikea's Customer Service Line might elicit more information.
We didn't actually buy any, but maybe those who have done can see if it has any stickers, or other information about where it can be used.

Just had a look on the IKEA website and they say at the bottom of the page under the Product Information tab and then under Care Instructions that it's dishwasher and microwave safe. Hope this helps. It's also got the weight and size, just looked at the plate website.

Great news! It's a shame IKEA don't do mugs or cups and saucers in the same material!
The Range do a similar type of plates and bowls. They also have mugs
Quite a bit more pricey than the Ikea stuff though at £1.49 to £1.59 per item. So, you could always get just the mugs from The Range and the rest from Ikea.
The Range products are called "Carine".

We bought 6 dinner plates, 6 side plates and 6 bowls of the IKES OFSTAT tempered glass, in Southampton yesterday in readiness for the Easter getaway. There were 2 other ranges available, but we preferred the plain white.
50p per item. Cheaper than melamine.
Swapped out the items in the 'van today. Put the OFSTAT through the dishwasher before loading into the 'van.
Very pleased with it.

I saw the Corelle for the first time at the weekend at Duncans of Wishaw. Had heard everyone raving about it for years but had never seen it anywhere. Was not what I expected!!! My husband is adamant we are sticking with our (ancient) Melamine but I might
have a look at the Ikea crockery next time we are there.0 -
Corelle is very expensive. OFTAST is very cheap. For anyone wanting to change from melamine (which we've never had because I hate the stuff) it's worth a punt at £9.00 for eighteen pieces! Corelle would cost you many times that amount.
Several caravanning friends have been out and replaced their melamine.
Another advantage is that it's very 'flat' and fits nicely together for storage.

Dropped a bowl and small plate from microwave above the hob height in the caravan, nada, nothing. The porridge spilled though, got told off by the boss!!!
2 large plates fell out of the dishwasher onto the kitched floor at home, nada, nothing.

I may go back and buy some of those mugs! We are always breaking them.
Interestingly, for anyone currently in Spain, we called into a middle size supermarket in La Jonquera and they have similar tempered glass plates, bowls and mugs, for just 50 cents each - so a saving!
