How do the Club decide how many wardens on sites?
Just back from another wonderful trip to Balbirnie Park in Markinch in Fife. Fifth or sixth visit this year.
As usual the site is beautifully presented despite having just one warden couple on site. The site covers a fair amount of ground and looks like it needs a lot of maintainance.
So how come this site just has one couple looking after it when others have two?
Considering another CC site localish to me is looking very down at heal this year yet has two couples looking after it I suppose it says a lot about the hard work Andy and Sam at Balbirnie put in.

I think it is based on the number of pitches and the facilities but also the time of year. Most maintanance other than grass cutting and cleaning is done by contractors so the soze of the site is less relevant. The sites without a toilet block normally have only two wardens and the rest more.
In Winter when there is less useage of the sites you will also see the numbers reduced.

The site I am comparing with has only hardstanding pitches, where Balbirnie has some grass ones, pitch numbers are silmilar, only one loo block each. Balbirnie I would estimate covers more ground and has loads of trees with resulting maintainence impact!

Some sites employ extra wardens at busy times but they finish earlier in the season than the longer term wardens.

I bet the other site is dearer than Balbirnie. I suspect the number of wardens depends a lot on the income from the site, price & volumn of occupancy.

When my parents were wardens I believe it was a function of the number of pitches, the amount of maintenance required and the time of year. I guess it will probably still be the same.

I imagine it will depend how scenic and interesting the surrounding area is and how many customers it will attract.
Balbirnie Park has Markinch plus the industrial towns of Glenrothes and Kirkaldy on it's doorstep for those who like retail therapy.
But if the lovely small coastal fishing villages and small coastal towns of Fife are what interests you, there are loads of CL's and CS's much better placed than Balbirnie park.
That may be the reason for the number of warden staff allocated by Head Office.
I have never stayed at Balbirnie Park as it is so close to home it's not worth taking the van, but I have visited friends staying there. It's an OK site.

Number of tolet blocks or lack of them may also be a determining factor as to how many wardens there are? Also, two couple sites for the majority of the week are, due to days off, operating as single couple sites anyway. Most sites with two or more toilet blocks seem to have more than two pairs of wardens it would seem.

There must certainly be a shortage of CC employees on site because I've often seen the site managers emptying bins, carrying out grounds maintenance......even cleaning toilets, for goodness sake!
Surely not something that the site manager and their partner should be doing?
Don't they have staff to do this? How can they manage to carry out their role of managers if they are busy doing all this?
