Pitching Instruction

Does anyone else like me yearn for the touring of yesteryear, where the technicalities of pitching amounted to nothing more than choosing a site?
Most of the waffle on here, " can we, shall we, what if we, why has he....." is just a load of speculative cobblers at times!

Might I just ask, from a practical point of view, how a site like, say, Cirencester Park, with maybe 100+ vans on at any one time is supposed to provide a car park for 100+ towcars?
ten rows of ten cars?
That's only 100, he said 100+

the weight of the van on the pitch wouldnt matter though.....
however, just another 'thing' for you to try and grapple with if you are thinking of moving to a MH.
one man's 'convenient' is another man's 'totally unacceptable'
so unacceptable (quote) is how you see having a car next to a your caravan?
It seems you only want MH on a site, remembering how you want to move cars off to a park on the two cars to a pitch thread, that was for 'fire safety', what's the reason now?

...Maybe he is thinking about the M/vans that will still be allowed in and out of site and on and off of pitches

Weight while on a pitch is not important, but moving, quite possibly heavy, things around to transfer the contents of the car is something my 74 year old back can do without!
Also, a caravan has to be loaded carefully to get the correct nose weight, we always load the van in the same way so we know the noseweight will be correct. This may not be in the way that allows us to make the best use of space if we needed to accommodate
the contents of the car too, so more moving of stuff needed.I'm on holiday, I just don't need the extra hassle.

Back on topic......now at Beechwood Grange, they have a photograph of how to pitch (car/van/awning as viewed from the road) stuck to the counter in reception, and the warden brings it to your attention when you check in.
Looks like all the vans near us are pitched correctly, yet even so, a new arrival went totally the wrong side of the peg!

pitch your van, empty itmes you travel with in the car, move car to car park, sit back enjoy the holiday. Like BB I dont understand why you would have to go back and forth to the car, just store stuff in the van.
I can see that you caravan in an entirely different way from us, and perhaps from many others as well.
You must also have a very large caravan indeed to accomodate all the stuff you bring in from your car without having it impinge on living space. i know I cannot do that with mine as after filling the caraven with sun loungers, chairs and table, sun brolly
(unbrella!), barbecue, coats, boots, maps, paperwork, rucsacs, and much more we would have to go off to the carpark to live in the car! And then take the car back to the caravan to reload the stuff we want to take out with us on a drive the next day.0 -
No one is saying this should happen only that it could. However you would need smaller pitches as no need for the car, keep some for disabled users. The pitching isntruction is then Caravan -> Awning if you want one or just pitch anyway if you dont have
an awning as all pitches would be teh requisite 6m from any others. .Currently in Caravan Club sites the cars are (in the main) parked within the 6 meter gap, so actually having a car-park for everyone would require more space, not less.

Write your comments here...the car park would not require 6m gap it would be just like any other car park. The pitches could be smaller as they would not have to accomodate a car, but the gap between pitches would be 6m or are we going round in circles?

...I would think the "extra" space gained would be minimal compare to what would be neede to make a car park with posible space needed for eg Ferry Meadows 260 cars, and it would be really interesting trying it at Park Coppice (Coniston)

Write your comments here...slightly off topic but places like Centre Parcs manage it with many more cars...... As I said its maybe not something we would have here or suitable to all sites but it does work to keep traffic off site for a safer cleaner environment.

But then they are purpose built and did not arrive in the UK untill the late 1980s.(Sherwood forest the first think)

Write your comments here...yes and in an earlier post I said probably more suited to any new sites not conversion of old ones.

When we had a caravan we kept everything in the caravan,am i the odd one out?????
You don't count. It's just a case of shouting "Fetch"

Nobody seems to have considered the issue of all those Toads. I suppose they are mostly too small to put anything in anyway. Perhaps we'll all go retro and vans will have an attendant horse/pack mule.

Isn't it a pity that people don't read what is actually written? In my post I asked the question "is it selfish?", I didn't state that it was even though this may be what I believe. Also I never mentioned "disabled" I used the words "less able". Not everyone
that is less able is entitled to a blue badge but walking the length of a site may be quite a trial for some.0 -

if you have a car on a pitch is not important, the gap between caravans, or MH must be 6m, you can have a car inbetween but you must still 6m between walls of adjacent outfits, the pitches might be smaller - van+ awning but overall no new pitches could be

Was like that last week when we were there, the M/H next to us was right over against the left (as you look at it) of the pitch within 3ft of our pitch, he was also parked nose in, no problem if he had pitched correctly. I had a word with the warden and
asked if he could have a word. Two other's opposite us were also pitched incorrectly.0 -
From a personal point of view I much prefer the system we currently have and would not seek out sites that made you leave your car in the car park. However, in our current state of health, if it was in the right area and there wasn't a convienient alternative, we would use it. We do store some things in the car, like the safari chef, however for a lot of things the car gets too hot in summer and too cold in winter, so we move them to the van. However, our site useage of the car is very little different from the average Motorhome. We prefer to walk from site or use public transport, so in a weeks stay will move the car an average of twice.

When on site we rarely use an awning (may use canopy) so loungers go in the car overnight ,we also keep some folding chairs in the car for when out, and when people pop round, and two boxes that hold "extra dry/tinned food to save shopping when away

The pitches could be smaller as they would not have to accomodate a car, but the gap between pitches would be 6m or are we going round in circles?
Err. No.
Currently we have in order:-
6m gap containing car; caravan or awning; awning or caravan; 6m gap containing car; etc
The "car-park" way we would have in order:-
6m gap with no car; caravan or awning; awning or caravan; 6m gap with no car; etc
So no space saved on pitches at all, and considerable space required for the carpark - which could in some places be sited amongst existing trees or other land unsuited to pitches.
It might make sites look less unatractive to the occupants who stay on site to admire the view but would be a pain in various parts of the body for people staying overnight.

I am open mouthed in astonishment at just how much stuff some folks need to take on holiday. Not criticising by the way, individual choice and all that, but I now know why some struggle with towing weights, storage space, taking ages to get set up, etc......

You would be open mouthed with astonishment with our kit then. We travel for up to 3 months at a time and expect (and often meet) all seasons on our trips e.g snow in Spain before later enjoying 30+ degrees and take clothing bedding etc to suite. Also since its our home for around 4 months a year we dont intend living a "hairshirt" existence and take anything we want to live a comfortable life. No problem with weights for us though a we have a large car with around 600kg payload in addition to that included in the van.
...
AD ...Best of both then, payload of big m/van,loads of space in c/van + plus go anywhere versatilly of car
