I can't believe some of the comments, people wanting to sue children, others wanting kids banned etc, and why, because a kid made a mistake and damaged a car. I understand the op is peeved but that's what you have comprehensive insurance for. Personally
I'd have just told the insurance it happened while I was in the shops and I came back to find it left like that. Mind you some people like drama and being a victim.

I would think the OP is peeved. If he claimed on his insurance he would have to pay his excess, £350 in my case. He would also loose some no claims discount, or if he had protection have one strike against him. Plus the last time I had a minor claim my insurance
costs went up by about £100 for the next couple of years. So for something that was no fault of the OP he could be out of pocket £550. Yes I think I would be peeved as well.

Are you suggesting that it is okay for a kid to damage a vehicle and that the owner of vehicle should just cough up and pay?  Good start to being a vandal perhaps?  How does the child learn that they should be more carefull not to damage other peoples' property?

We are not wealthy and would have difficulty paying for damage caused by third parties especially when we are not at fault.

We would also pursue it as far was we could through the small claims court to recover any losses even if this means that the child and his parents have to appear in court.

Hopefully I will be saving that child from a life of crime and instilling some common sense and respect for others into them.

So it's not OK for the OP to pursue the parents for reimbursement but it's fine to lie on an insurance claim. I'm glad we don't all share your standards, Furball.

If the money was not forthcoming I might well have claimed from my insurance and a;so asked that the legal protection recover any losses. It has worked for me in the past

Not quite sure how you jump from what I said to implying that I think its acceptable or how a clumsy kid becomes a vandal. The op asked for opinions, I gave one. Get them to appear in court, good luck, four times I attended a small claims court at the cost
of lost days work on the final time the business finally turned up, I won but never got a penny so it cost me  to register my claim four days wages plus the cost of a independent expert, I paid it believing I would get it back total I was claiming 2300, total
paid/loss of wages 1360 total loss 3660. Small claims courts in my experience are a joke.

It's naive to assume that getting judgement in your favour automatically means you will get payment. You have to weigh up the odds before you start and be prepared to take enforcement measures if necessary.

Where did I say it wasn't ok to pursue parents, please tell me I actually said about people wanting to sue  the kid never did I mention parents, really wish people would read what is written. The op asked for opinions, personally I don't think he'll get
far with his claim, in the meantime he has a damaged car and faces the bill himself. As for lying to the insurance, the cars damaged that is the truth, the car needs repairing and it will cost the same to repair regardless of how it is claimed it was done,
small white lie of how. Not sure a multi million pound insurance company would even care!

I will add that I would pay up if that was my daughter but then some of you would be posting on here saying that you seen a father read the riot act and smack his child  on site.

    Oh, for goodness sake!

Even if you did not use those actual words the implication was there as you have criticised the OP for pursuing the matter by legitimate means.

Lying is lying. Can you not see that?

...And then some complain about the ever rising cost of insurance ,that has been brought on partly because of "white lies"
